Born in 1856 in the village of Smiljan in the Austrian Empire (today Croatia), an ethnic Serb whose father was an Orthodox priest. He studied engineering at the Graz Polytechnic but left without a degree. Strolling through Budapest in 1882, he claimed to suddenly "see" in his mind the complete design of a rotating magnetic field — the heart of the AC motor. In 1884 he emigrated to America with a few coins in his pocket, joined Edison's company, and soon broke with him over a dispute about pay. Between 1887 and 1888 he built the polyphase AC induction motor; George Westinghouse bought the patents, igniting the "war of currents" against Edison, champion of direct current. The 1893 Chicago World's Fair and the 1895 Niagara Falls hydroelectric plant both adopted AC, and Tesla's system won the entire modern power grid. He then turned to wireless power, building the Wardenclyffe Tower in 1901; it collapsed after funding dried up and Marconi got there first. His later years grew lonelier and poorer; he claimed to have built a "death ray," and in 1943 he died alone in the Hotel New Yorker.
First, in 1885 he left Edison over a single promise. As the story goes, Edison offered $50,000 if he could improve the DC dynamos. Tesla toiled for months and succeeded; when he asked for the money, Edison reportedly said, "Tesla, you don't understand our American humor" — it had only been a joke. Whatever the exact details, the outcome is certain: he resigned in anger. A newly arrived immigrant with almost nothing chose to walk out rather than be toyed with. That rupture set him on a collision course with direct current.
Second, in 1888 he sold his AC patents to Westinghouse rather than build his own empire. He judged that what he wanted was for AC to blanket the world, not to run a company himself. Westinghouse bought his polyphase system for roughly $60,000 in cash and stock, plus a royalty of $2.50 per horsepower. The choice gave AC an industrial-scale engine for expansion — but also handed his fate to someone else.
Third, around 1897, he tore up that royalty contract. The "war of currents" had drained Westinghouse's finances, and investors pressed him to shed the heavy Tesla royalty or the company would fall. By Westinghouse's own account, Tesla tore the contract to shreds in front of him, saying: you believed in me when it counted; now it is my turn to save you. What he gave up, judged by the installed capacity of the day, was a sum that would have made him one of the richest men alive. He preserved the standard-bearer of AC — and shut the door on his own financial freedom.

In 1901 he persuaded the financier J.P. Morgan to invest about $150,000 in a 57-meter tower at Wardenclyffe on Long Island. What he sold Morgan was wireless communication; what he truly wanted to build was "free wireless power." That same year, Marconi completed a transatlantic radio transmission with far cruder equipment — snatching away the laurel Tesla felt was his, and draining the investor's confidence.
When Tesla admitted his real goal was wireless power that no one could meter, Morgan flatly refused to add funds — a business that cannot charge means nothing to a banker. The tower was abandoned and demolished for debt in 1917. This was the watershed of his life: before it he stood victorious at the frontier of his age; for nearly forty years after it he had not a single successful major project, sliding into poverty, isolation, and obscurity. His late pronouncements grew ever grander — a particle-beam "death ray," communication with Mars — while his achievements grew ever fewer.

By his own account, he needed no drawings to conceive an invention; he could let a device turn in his imagination for weeks, inspect where it wore down, and refine it until it was perfect before ever building it. This almost supernatural visualization was the core of how he worked.
He had severe compulsive tendencies: everything he did had to be divisible by three — walking three times around a block before entering, wiping his cutlery with a fresh set of 18 napkins at dinner. He loathed touching hair, pearls, and round objects, dined alone, slept very little (reportedly only about two hours a night), and remained lifelong celibate, pouring all his energy into invention.
In his last years he gave his affection almost entirely to pigeons. He fed them daily in the park and loved one white pigeon above all, saying he loved it "as a man loves a woman," and that when it died he felt his life's work had died with it. The man who bent the forces of nature to his will was left, in the end, with a bird as his softest tie.

Again and again he handed his wealth to others or gave it up outright — unable to protect his interests, poor at running things, and in his last years living on hotel bills that Westinghouse paid out of old loyalty. Second, he grew more prophet than engineer. From the 1930s he frequently announced astonishing inventions to the press: a "death ray"/teleforce weapon that could down aircraft, signals possibly from Mars, unlimited energy. Most were never demonstrated in verifiable form, blurring the line between vision and delusion and eroding public trust in him.
Third, the stain of eugenics. In a 1935 magazine article he predicted that by 2100 eugenics would be widespread, advocating that the "unfit" be prevented from breeding to "purify" humanity. Such views were not unique in his era, but they read as repellent today — even the most dazzling mind can be captured by the darkest prejudices of its time.

For anyone who would move the world by personal talent, this is the sharpest lesson: however extreme your technical peak, without a resource structure (cash flow, equity, a chargeable model) that lets you keep funding the next invention, even the greatest contribution will run dry in your hands.
