Today we spread a map on the table and ask a more down-to-earth question: how much does where a country sits determine how it will act and what troubles it will face? Mountains, oceans, rivers, and plains don't vote, yet over centuries they quietly deal each country a hand of cards. Geopolitics is the study of how geography and power shape each other. But tread carefully: it is easily underrated ("who reads maps in this day and age?") and just as easily mythologized ("geography decides everything"). Today's four blocks sit right along that tension: the limits of geographic determinism, sea power vs land power, buffer zones, and chokepoints—moving from "how much does geography govern?" to "exactly how does it govern?"

The healthy usage: treat geography as the first question, not the last answer—first ask what constraints it sets, then ask how institutions and technology maneuver within them.
