EN Huntington's disease is dominant and fatal, yet it persists: symptoms typically begin between the thirties and fifties, after most carriers have already reproduced. Generalise that and you get the foundation of the whole topic — in the wild, animals are steadily removed by predation, starvation and disease, so fewer and fewer individuals reach each later age. A defect that strikes at twenty hits nearly every carrier; one that strikes at sixty acts only on the few who got there. Medawar named that region the selection shadow in 1952. Aging is not selected for; it is what is left where selection cannot reach.
EN Bins by the gate get emptied daily; the one at the far end gets emptied monthly, and that is where the mess piles up — not by design, but by clearing frequency. Genomes work the same way. New harmful variants arise every generation, and the age at which they act is unrelated to how harmful they are. Early-acting ones are cleared fast; late-acting ones are not, so they accumulate. That is Medawar's mutation accumulation: aging needs no aging gene, only a heap of unrelated small faults that happen to land late. Rose's fly experiments in the 1980s, breeding only from late-laying flies, extended lifespan by 30–50%. But that result is equally consistent with the next section's mechanism, and how much each contributes is still unsettled.
EN Williams (1957) pointed at a nastier case than oversight: a variant that helps at twenty and harms at sixty spreads anyway, because the early ledger entry weighs far more. In worms, altering the daf-2 gene doubles average lifespan — yet when mutants and wild type were cultured together for many generations in 2004, the long-lived mutants were competed out. Mice with elevated p53 activity got fewer tumours but aged early (2002); cleaner later models with properly regulated extra p53 did not reproduce that, so this case stays contested. And nobody is trading lifespan for reproduction: carriers simply left more offspring, so the variant and its late cost both became common.
EN Repair costs energy and materials that could go into reproduction instead. Kirkwood (1977): if you will probably be eaten before you are three, building a body that still works at fifteen never pays off — hence the disposable soma. That yields a falsifiable prediction: species that are hard to kill should age slowly. Fliers, shelled animals and underground rodents all outlive same-sized ground dwellers, and naked mole-rat mortality does not rise with age across 30 years of data. Austad's 1993 opossum study tested it prospectively: an island population with no large predators for millennia lived 25–50% longer, bred smaller litters and aged more slowly in the tendons. The specific resource-allocation claim is contested; the coarse prediction holds well.
