// 01

EN In 1995 two researchers put a set of seemingly unrelated events on one table: independently replicating molecules linked into a chromosome; single cells becoming multicellular; insects that once laid their own eggs becoming lifelong non-reproductive workers; a bacterium swallowed by an archaeon becoming the mitochondrion. One thing joins them. Before the transition, the lower-level units could replicate on their own; afterwards they can only be replicated as part of a larger whole. Your skin cells cannot start a lineage; a worker ant leaves no offspring of her own. Division of labour follows from that closure rather than causing it: only once the whole is the sole unit of replication can a part afford to drop a skill entirely. Two readings to avoid. This is not a ladder — most lineages went through no transition at all and are doing fine; bacteria are second to none in numbers, range, and metabolic variety. And nothing merged "in order to" become complex: sticking together, not falling apart, leaving more descendants. The list is also a framework for organising questions, not a verified law — which events count, and whether they are one kind of thing, remains disputed. Szathmáry revised it in 2015, separating origin, maintenance and subsequent evolution, and the revised list is two items shorter.

EN Start with the problem. In any clump of cells, a variant that copies itself faster than its neighbours will spread through the clump — even if the clump dies of it. That is not bad character; it is selection still running at the lower level. So a whole does not become one thing automatically; it has to be held together by specific devices. First: a single-cell bottleneck each generation. You began as one cell, so the tens of trillions of cells in your body share essentially one manual, and cheating a neighbour means cheating your own copy. Second: setting aside the cells that will be passed on. Honestly, though, this is no universal rule — plants have no dedicated germ line, differentiating flowers from ordinary body cells, and many animals segregate late. It is one solution, not a requirement. Third: fairness at the split. Each of your two versions of a gene has an even chance of entering a sex cell, and that evenness is maintained, not automatic: a stretch of mouse chromosome called the t-haplotype is passed on by carrier males to roughly nine offspring in ten, sometimes nearly all, at the cost of embryos that inherit two copies usually dying and homozygous males being sterile. It spreads not because it is good but because it rigged the draw. This is measurable. In 2012 a group put baker's yeast under one rule — keep only what settles fastest — and after sixty rounds got snowflake-shaped clusters. What matters is not that clusters appeared but that their cells were all descendants of one cell rather than strangers stuck together, so the bottleneck came free with that way of growing. As clusters grew, rates of programmed cell death rose, which is how clusters break in two and make offspring. Run on for 600 rounds, about 3,000 generations, the clusters became roughly 20,000 times larger and plainly visible, by lengthening cells and entangling branches.

EN A honeybee colony is the clearest place to watch this. Workers have ovaries and can lay unfertilised eggs that become males, yet in a normal colony only about one male in a thousand is worker-laid. What stops them is other workers. In 1989 a direct test showed that workers seek out and eat worker-laid eggs while leaving the queen's alone. The reason is arithmetic: the queen mates with a dozen or more males, so workers in one hive are half-sisters, and a worker is somewhat more closely related to the queen's sons (her brothers) than to another worker's sons (her nephews). Reporting beats tolerating, and the policing is done by peers. Under single mating the numbers reverse and there is no reason for such policing — the same ledger as in kin selection. Which came first, high relatedness or the workers? A 2008 comparison across 267 eusocial bees, ants and wasps found single mating to be the ancestral state in all eight independent origins examined, with multiple mating appearing only in lineages whose workers had already lost the ability to reproduce. Suggestive, and still contested. Suppression is never finished either: cells break loose daily, and that is literally selection running inside you, so multicellular bodies carry brakes — apoptosis, division limits, immune surveillance. Elephants have roughly a hundred times more cells than we do and live long, yet in records of 644 elephants about 3% died of cancer against 11–25% in humans, and their genome carries up to 20 copies of the brake gene TP53 where we have one. The causal chain there is still under discussion. A transition is "complete" not when conflict ends but when it has been pushed down to one level and runs at a rate the whole can carry.
