When it's finally black soil, they dig it out together and spread it into a flowerpot — the dirt they made grows the next crop.
Peels don't rot on their own — invisible bacteria and tiny bugs in the soil "eat" and break them into nutrients, turning them back into soil plants can use. Then ponder: it has no eyes, so how does it know which side is bright? She's in charge of returning the worm safely to the soil afterward.
Big sister is the "researcher" — records tunnels, manages the cloth and moisture; little sister is the "keeper" — feeds leaves, mists water. They co-manage one jar and crouch down together each day to find where the worm is. Use the magnifier to look at the pollen on the stamens and the "pollen pants" on a bug's legs. If no bugs show, be the bee yourself: dab pollen from one flower onto another's stamen with a swab.
Her job: "detective, spot the bug." Whoever sees a bee first whispers it (no shouting — that scares it off). Use the magnifier to peek at the yellow powder in the flower's heart. Let her be a bee — "buzzzz" — and pretend-dab from one flower to another with her finger, learning with her whole body that "pollen gets carried around."
Her job: "observe and hand-pollinate." Count how many bugs come in a few minutes and what they are (bee / butterfly / hoverfly), and look closely at where the pollen sticks. Challenge: hand-pollinate a cucumber or squash flower (dab a male flower's pollen onto a female flower's stamen), mark it, and check in a few days whether that one sets a little fruit — she personally made a "flower become fruit." Then ask her: what if there were no bees at all?

If they hand-pollinate, big sister works the swab while little sister holds the magnifier on it. Let the loop — from a single seed to your mouth — close once, right in front of the kids.

Challenge: count how many days from sowing to today and how much this pot yielded in total; then leave the strongest plant unpicked, let it flower and seed, extending "seed to harvest" into the next loop — "harvest to sow again."

A seed, a little water and light, some time, plus a hand from the bugs — and it becomes a bite on your plate: that's the whole of farming, and there's a loop like this behind everything we eat.
