Materials: a large-ish sheet (A4 or bigger), a few markers. How to play: draw home "as seen from the ceiling" — start with a big box for the living room, then add the sofa, TV, dining table, doors, and each room inside. The key is to guide the child to imagine: "If I were a little bird up on the ceiling looking down, what shape is the sofa?" — not drawn head-on, but as a top-down outline (sofa = a rectangle, round table = a circle). Tape it to the wall when done, and you've got a "family map."
She can't grasp a "top-down view" yet, so let her be the "coloring helper": once big sister draws the room frames, she fills in the colors (living room yellow, bedroom blue) and adds a sticker marking "my bed is here." Hold her finger and walk one lap around the real house — wherever you go, tap that spot on the paper: "We're in the kitchen now — tap the kitchen on the map." Matching "where we walked" to "where on the paper" is her biggest win.
She's the "cartographer": figure out the top-down outline and place the rooms in the right relative positions — living room in the middle, kitchen on the left, bedroom on the right, where the doors are. Challenge her to add a "sense of scale": the living room is bigger than the bathroom, so draw it bigger. Then add a "legend" (small square = bed, small circle = table). Ask her: Why are maps always drawn from above, not head-on? (Drawn head-on, things in back get hidden behind things in front and you can't tell what's next to what; from above, every object's position is clear and nothing overlaps — that's why all real maps are "bird's-eye." Two or three sentences is plenty.)
Big sister is the "cartographer" who builds the skeleton and sets positions; little sister is the "decorator" who colors and labels (no overlapping jobs: structure to sister, coloring to the little one). When done, play a verification game: one says "I'm standing in front of the TV," the other puts a finger on that spot on the map — high-five if it's right. A map isn't just drawn, it's meant to be "used."
A map is essentially "flattening the three-dimensional real world onto a two-dimensional sheet" while keeping things in their right relative positions. People naturally recognize things "head-on," so switching to "top-down" takes a mental turn — and that turn is the starting point of spatial thinking. Variation: before heading out next time, draw a route map "from home to the neighborhood gate," and let the child hold it as the "navigator," matching each stretch as you walk.
Materials: a chopstick or small stick, a few pebbles as markers; sunshine is best, use a phone compass app on cloudy days. How to play (sunny version): stick the stick upright on an open bit of balcony or yard, place a pebble at the tip of its shadow as a marker; come back after 15–20 minutes — the shadow has moved, so place another pebble at the new tip. Connect the two pebbles into a line — that line is the "east–west" direction (the first pebble is toward the west, the later one toward the east, because the sun travels east to west and the shadow goes the opposite way). Stand on it facing north: right hand is east, left hand is west, back is south.
She's the "shadow marker": when big sister says "the shadow's tip is here," she sets down a pebble. She can't grasp the compass directions, but she can plainly see something magical — the shadow quietly moves on its own. Have her check every so often and gasp "the shadow ran away!" — that's enough. Then teach her to reach a hand toward the sun: "the sun slowly moves house," turning direction into something she can gesture with her little hands.
She's the "direction detective": plant the stick, place markers, draw the east-west line, deduce the four directions, then mark them onto the family map from Activity 1 (draw a "north-pointing" arrow in the corner). Challenge her to remember the rule "up is north, down is south, left is west, right is east" — that's the map convention; the real world is checked against the sun or a compass. Ask her: Why does the shadow move, and why does a compass always point north-south? (The shadow moves because the Earth spins and the sun appears to go from east to west; a compass points north-south because the Earth itself is a giant magnet, and the little needle lines up along the Earth's magnetic field. Two or three sentences is plenty.)
Big sister is the "detective" who judges and draws the line; little sister is the "marker + timekeeper" who sets pebbles and calls out every now and then "time to check the shadow!" (no overlapping jobs: judging directions to sister, marking to the little one). Once directions are set, play "point the way": call out "East!" and both turn to face east together — whoever turns the wrong way makes a funny face. It turns abstract directions into a whole-body turning game.
Direction is the "absolute coordinate" of space — no matter how you turn your body, north is always north. Finding direction by the sun is humanity's oldest skill; the compass lets you find direction even on cloudy days and at night. Variation: at night, find the North Star — first spot the Big Dipper (like a big ladle), follow the two stars at the ladle's lip and extend the line out about five times; that not-very-bright but never-moving star is the North Star, and straight below it is north. Ancient travelers relied on it at night.
Materials: a few slips of paper, a pen, one small "treasure" (a piece of candy, a little toy — anything). How to play: one person is the "hider" who hides the treasure and draws a treasure map — you can reuse the family map from Activity 1 and draw a big "×" at the hiding spot; the advanced version is a "clue relay": the first slip hints "go to the fridge," the fridge has a second slip "look under the sofa," leading step by step to the treasure. The other person follows the map to find it, then swap hider and play a few rounds.
This is the one she's most excited about of the four. She can't read a map, so let big sister hold it as the "leader" while she's the "little detective" charging ahead to dig around. You can also give her a "one-step map": draw a big arrow pointing at the sofa, and she follows it over, lifts the cushion, and finds it. The cheer at finding the treasure is the best reward. When it's her turn to hide, help her draw an "×" — she'll feel she's holding a big secret.
She's the "master hider + puzzle-setter": design the hunt route, draw a map others can read, or write "clue relay" riddles ("I'm very cold and full of food inside" = the fridge). Challenge her to work in the directions from Activity 2: write a clue like "stand in front of the TV, walk three steps north, look east," forcing her to tie map, direction, and position all together. Ask her: Why do real treasure maps often draw a north arrow and a scale bar? (With a north arrow, others know which real-world direction the map's "up" faces; with a scale, they know how much real distance a short stretch on the map equals — without those two, you can't actually follow it. Two or three sentences is plenty.)
The most fun teaming: sisters as one team vs. mom-and-dad as another, taking turns to hide and hunt. Big sister is the captain who reads the map and points the way; little sister is the scout who charges up to dig (no overlapping jobs: map-reading and directing to sister, digging to the little one). Big sister has to learn to "hunt together with little sister" — read the clue aloud to her and let her be the one to lift the cushion. Finding the treasure and cheering with arms up together is more fun than finding it alone.
A hunt turns "reading a map" into "using a map" — the child has to match the "×" on paper to a corner of the real world, and that "paper→reality" translation is the core skill of map-reading. Variation: move the hunt to the neighborhood or a park, draw a bigger "outdoor treasure map" using real trees, benches, and slides as landmarks, and the sense of direction scales up from the house to the whole neighborhood.
Materials: a few pillows or plush toys on the floor as "obstacles," a toy on the table as the "goal." How to play: one person is the "robot" who only obeys three commands — "walk N steps," "turn left," "turn right"; the other is the "commander" who, using only their voice, guides the robot from start to goal step by step, around the obstacles. The robot must follow commands exactly; say a wrong one and you start over. It's a game that really puts "direction words" and "step counts" to use, and especially trains "seeing directions from someone else's point of view."
She makes the perfect "little robot" — as long as she gets "go forward" and "stop," she can play. Don't ask her to tell left from right; just play "go and stop": big sister yells "go go go — stop!" and she obeys like an on/off switch, giggling nonstop. Let her be the "commander" once too, even if all she can do is point a finger "that way!" — pointing a direction is her way of expressing space, and that's already great.
She's the star as "commander": rehearse the route in her head, work out "3 steps forward, turn right, 2 more steps forward," and — the hardest and most valuable part — think from the robot's point of view: "which side is its left, from where I stand?" Challenge her to use only commands, no finger-pointing, to deliver the robot precisely to the goal. Ask her: Why isn't your "left" the same side as the facing robot's "left"? ("Left and right" go with the body; standing face-to-face, you point opposite ways, so your left hand faces exactly their right side — which is why, to direct someone, you switch to "their" left and right. This is called perspective-taking, and it's where directions-giving so often goes wrong. Two or three sentences is plenty.)
Big sister is the "commander," little sister the "robot": start with the simple "go–stop," and once she's got it, add "turns" (no overlapping jobs: giving commands to sister, obeying to the little one). Once it flows, swap: let little sister point-command big sister the "robot," who obeys with exaggerated flair while little sister cracks up. Switch roles and both feel that "commanding" and "being commanded" are two different kinds of thinking.
"3 steps forward, turn right" is the most primitive programming — breaking one task into precise instructions that the machine follows to the letter; one wrong step and it never arrives, which is exactly what navigation apps and robot vacuums do. And "swapping perspective for left/right" trains spatial imagination you can't dodge in finding your way or reading a map. Variation: write the commands on cards (arrows for forward/left/right), lay out a whole string of cards first, then have the robot "execute" them — an unplugged "coding challenge" that connects neatly to Day 31.
If you only do one, do "Hide & Hunt" — no prep, just a sheet with an "×" and a hidden piece of candy, and the two sisters can go wild for half an hour. It turns "reading a map" into "using a map to find a real thing": the 3-year-old is so excited she charges out front, while the 9-year-old quietly puts direction and position to work drawing the map and setting the clues. On some sunny weekend, take them to the balcony and pin down north-south-east-west with a stick's shadow, and for the first time that abstract thing called "direction" is right under their feet.
