This week we play with just one thing—paper. Any A4 sheet lying around, a few books, a bit of tape, and you've got a whole afternoon of "whoa" moments: a floppy sheet of paper can fly when you throw it, hold coins when you fold it, support a stack of books when you roll it, and become a brand-new sheet when you tear it up and soak it. The kids will get their hands on one big idea—whether paper is weak or strong depends entirely on the shape you give it. We split it into 4 things: make paper fly, make it bridge a gap, make it stand and hold books, and turn old paper into new. Mess it up, ball it up, start over—paper is the last thing to worry about wasting. Five minutes of setup and you're going.

Prep & Safety

Materials: a few sheets of A4, some paperclips for weight, a tape measure (or just count paces). Find open space—a hallway, the living room, or head outside. Fold two or three styles first: a wide-wing glider (slow, easy to catch) and a pointed long-range dart (fast, flies far)—start with the classic easy ones. Before folding, run a fingernail hard along each crease, and make both wings exactly the same size so it doesn't veer.

Safety: When throwing, never aim the nose at anyone's face, especially eyes; indoors, don't stand at the top of a stairwell backing up as you throw. Paper edges cut—remind them not to swipe fast. Paperclips are small and a choking risk for a 3-year-old—you or the 9-year-old attach the weights and collect them right after; none on the floor.

Age 3

Her job: "throw hard + fetch." A big swing sends the plane off, then she toddles over to grab it. Give her the slow wide-wing model—easy to throw, easy to catch, won't vanish in one throw. She also colors her plane and marks it "this one's mine," so every plane has her touch.

Age 9

Her job: "change one variable, measure once." Using the same plane, change only one thing each time—a bigger wing angle, a paperclip on the nose, heavier paper—throw three times, measure the distance, write it down, and find the best-flying combo. Challenge question: why do wingtips tilt up a little? (The upward tilt keeps the plane from rolling side to side; a forward center of gravity keeps it from tumbling.)

Big sister is the "engineer"—folds different styles, tunes the wings and weights; little sister is the "test pilot + spotter"—throws hard and runs to the landing spot calling "it's here!", while big sister measures with the tape and records (no swapping: folding and tuning to big sister, throwing and calling out to little sister). Run two contests: "farthest flight" and "longest airborne"—you'll notice the winner is rarely the same plane.

The Why + a Twist

As the plane moves forward, air flows over and under the wings and holds it up—that upward push is "lift"; a slightly heavy nose and light tail keep it gliding forward instead of tumbling. Twist: fold a short, wide "glider," release it gently from up high, and compete for the slowest flight, the longest hang time—you'll discover "flies far" and "floats long" are two completely different designs.

Materials: two stacks of books (or two cups) for bridge piers, a few A4 sheets for the deck, some blocks or big buttons for the load. Set the two stacks about 15 cm apart, lay a sheet across as a bridge, then add the load one piece at a time in the middle and see how many it takes before it collapses. First try a flat sheet (it usually caves the moment you load it), then fold the paper into waves (accordion pleats, like corrugated cardboard) and lay that across to compare.

Safety: Use blocks or big buttons for the load, not coins—a choking risk for a 3-year-old, watch the whole time. Don't stack the pier books too high; a topple can hurt hands and feet. Keep it off the table edge so falling blocks don't land on toes.

Age 3

Her job: "add one at a time until it drops." She sets blocks on the middle of the bridge one by one, eyes glued, watching for the moment it goes "whump"—the collapse is her favorite part. She also helps fold the "waves": you demo one pleat, she follows, pressing crease after crease with her fingers.

Age 9

Her job: "design and compare the numbers." How many fits on a flat sheet? On folded waves? On a triangle fold, or a sheet rolled into a tube for a bridge? Record each number and rank the "strongest structure." Challenge question: why does just folding make paper stronger? (Each crease acts like an added beam, spreading the load out so the paper isn't bending all in one spot.)

A flat sheet sags because the force all lands on one spot in the middle; fold it into waves and every pleat shares the weight—the paper grows "bones." Your cardboard boxes are strong for exactly this reason: that wavy middle layer is holding them up. Twist: fold waves of different heights—do tighter, taller pleats make a stiffer bridge? Have her fold two and test them side by side.

Materials: a few A4 sheets, a roll of tape, some books. This is the biggest "whoa" of the week: roll a sheet into a tube, tape the seam, stand it up as a "leg," set four tubes in a square, and rest a book on top as a tray—those thin paper tubes actually hold a book, and you keep adding more, one at a time, until the kids can't believe it. The tighter you roll and the firmer you tape the seam, the more it holds.

Safety: Don't stack the books too high—stand back in case they suddenly tip and hit hands or feet; add books gently and centered. Don't wind tape tightly around a finger. Work on a steady table or floor, away from the edge.

Age 3

Her job: "stack the books up." She lays books one by one onto the tubes, watching the magic moment they hold—and when it finally caves, she helps catch it and you both go "oops!" together. She also rolls the paper and hands it to big sister for taping; rolling is a move she loves.

Her job: "compare shapes." Same sheet, rolled into a round tube, folded into a triangular column, folded into a square column—make a few of each as legs and see which shape holds the most books. Challenge question: why can a thin rolled sheet hold up a book? (A round tube passes the load evenly all the way around its wall—there's no "soft direction" for it to buckle, so it's exceptionally strong.)

Lay a sheet flat on its side and a gentle push bends it; roll it into a tube and stand it up, and the weight travels straight down the wall all the way around—the paper has no direction it can fold, so it holds tons. Twist: one sheet and a little tape only—challenge to hold the most books, with the whole family guessing "how many?" first, then testing one book at a time.

4. Make Recycled Paper: Old Sheet to NewMake Recycled Paper

Prep & Safety

Turning scrap paper into a fresh new sheet is the most ceremonial job of the week. Materials: scrap paper (napkins, old worksheets, torn-up delivery slips), warm water, a basin, an old window screen or piece of cloth/fine mesh as a "papermaking screen," a sponge, a few towels. Steps: soak the torn paper in warm water for about 15 minutes until soft, then mash it into a pulp by hand (or in a blender); spread the pulp thin and even on the mesh, sponge and press the water out from the back, carefully flip it onto a towel, press flat, and let it dry a day or two into a sheet of handmade paper.

Safety: If you use a blender for the pulp, an adult must operate it—power off and unplugged before anyone goes near the blades; the kids only watch. Skip the appliance and mash by hand and it's safer still. Warm, not hot, water; the floor will splash, so lay a towel down to prevent slipping; supervise the 3-year-old around water, and don't let her put pulp in her mouth.

Age 3

Her job: "tear paper + stir the pulp." She tears scrap paper into little bits (tearing is the best fine-motor workout there is, and she'll never tire of it), drops it all into the basin, and swishes and squishes it with her hands, working the mush around—the slippery, squishy feel is the whole point.

Age 9

Her job: "couch + press." Spread the pulp evenly and thin across the screen (too thick won't dry, too thin tears—find the just-right amount), sponge and press the water out, then hold her breath and flip the wet sheet onto a towel to release it. Challenge question: how does old paper become new paper? (Paper is just plant fibers pressed together; soak it, break it apart, spread and press it flat again, and the fibers relink into a fresh sheet.)

Big sister is the "papermaker"—handles the steady, careful steps of spreading, pressing, and releasing; little sister is the "prep + decorator"—tears paper, stirs pulp, and sprinkles dried petals or paper confetti onto the spread pulp for patterns (no swapping: couching and releasing to big sister, tearing, stirring, and sprinkling to little sister). Make a few sheets with dried flowers; once dry, cut them into bookmarks or fold into little cards and write someone a note.

Paper is countless tiny plant fibers pressed tightly together; soak it and the fibers loosen into a mush; spread it flat and press out the water and the fibers hook and tangle together again, drying into a new sheet—exactly how factory paper recycling works, just a mini version with a basin and a screen. Twist: add colored scrap, petals, or glitter to the pulp, or lay a few small leaves on the screen before spreading, for one-of-a-kind textured handmade paper.

If You Only Pick One

If you want just one, the easiest is the paper bridge load test—two stacks of books, one sheet, a handful of blocks and you're set. No throwing (nothing to hit anyone), no water (no wet table to mop). Fold one wave, lay it across, and watch it carry several more blocks—the contrast is obvious at a glance.
