Making Together: The Science of Sound

Sound is invisible and untouchable—but this week we're going to catch it and show it to the kids. It turns out every sound is really the same thing: something shaking. Rice hops on a drum because the drum skin shakes; a cup phone carries your voice because the string shakes; water glasses ring high or low because more or less water shakes faster or slower. All four activities happen right on your table: make sound visible, send it down a string, tap out a scale on a row of glasses, and play games with a blindfold using only your ears. No bothering the neighbors, and cleanup is just wiping the table and pouring out water. Five minutes to set up.

1. Seeing Sound VibrateSeeing Sound Vibrate

⏱ 15 minMaterials: bowl + plastic wrap + rice

Prep & Safety

Materials: a big bowl or empty can, a sheet of plastic wrap (or a stretched balloon skin), a rubber band, a small handful of rice (or salt, or shredded paper). Stretch the wrap tight over the bowl's mouth, band it snug into a little drum, and scatter a few dozen grains of rice on top. Now lean in and shout "Aaah—", or bang a pot nearby—the rice hops up and dances on its own, and the moment the sound stops, so does the rice. Bonus round: loop a rubber band over an open box as a "guitar string," pluck it, and watch it buzz.

Safety: Rice and rubber bands are small—keep the 3-year-old from putting them in mouth, nose, or ears, watch the whole time, count and collect afterward. Don't bang the pot hard enough to hurt your hand, and don't bang it right by an ear—a loud sound up close can damage hearing, keep some distance. Never put the plastic wrap over anyone's face.

Age 3

Her job: "shout at the drum + watch the rice hop." Lean in and yell "Aaah—," watch the rice bounce and scatter; the louder she shouts the harder it jumps. This is magic she can command directly, and she'll do it a dozen times without tiring. She also sprinkles the rice on, one little pinch at a time.

Age 9

Her job: "test which sound makes the rice jump highest." Low growl, high squeal, banging the pot, clapping—try each a few times, see which makes the rice hop the wildest, and find the rule: louder = shaking harder. Challenge question: we never touched the rice, so how does it jump? (Your shout makes the air shake, push after push; that shaking reaches the skin, the skin trembles, and the rice gets flicked up—sound is just "shaking air.")

Sisters Together

Big sister is the "sound maker," coming up with different noises and banging different pots and bowls to test; little sister is the "observer," watching the rice and shouting "It jumped!" "It stopped!" then re-sprinkling for another round (no swapping jobs: making sounds is big sister's, sprinkling and reporting is little sister's). Together build a "who makes the rice jump highest" leaderboard, sketching a tiny icon for each sound.

The Why + a Twist

Every sound is born from a vibration—shouting makes the vocal cords in your throat shake, and that shaking pushes the air outward layer by layer, until it reaches a drum skin, or our own eardrums, and becomes sound we hear. Invisible vibration, revealed by hopping rice. Twist: rest a hand lightly on your own throat and hum a long "Mmm—"; feel it buzz against your palm; stop, and the buzz stops too—your voice comes from the same shaking.

Prep & Safety

Materials: two paper cups (yogurt cups or sanded, lidless cans work too), 3–5 m of cotton string or kite line, two toothpicks or matchsticks (as knot-stoppers). Poke a small hole in the center of each cup's bottom, thread the string in from outside, and tie the end inside around half a toothpick so it can't pull back out. Two people each take a cup and walk apart until the string is pulled straight and tight; one speaks softly into a cup, the other holds a cup to the ear—clear as day! Let the string go slack, or pinch it, and the sound vanishes.

Safety: Poke the hole with a pen tip or blunt awl—have an adult or big sister do the poking, never point sharp things at anyone; toothpicks are pointy, so blunt the tip or wrap tape first, and keep the 3-year-old off the sharp end. A long string trips people and must never go around a neck—string around the neck is dangerous—put it away as soon as you're done. If using cans, the rims must be sanded so they don't cut.

Age 3

Her job: "whisper a secret + listen with the cup to her ear." Say "I love you" or "hello!" into the cup, then dash to the other end and press the cup to her ear for big sister's reply—the wonder of "the voice ran down the string to me" keeps her going a long time. She also walks to her spot and helps pull the string tight: "A little more back!"

Age 9

Her job: "find out when the phone works best." Try slack vs. tight, short vs. long, cotton vs. nylon string, and pinching the string mid-way—see which is clearest and which cuts the sound off. Challenge question: why does the voice travel down the string without leaking away? (Speaking makes the cup bottom's skin shake; the shaking runs all the way along the taut string to the far cup and makes its bottom shake, turning back into sound; let the string go slack and the shaking can't cross.)

Sisters Together

Big sister is the "engineer," doing the poking, threading, and knotting that need precision; little sister is the "operator," holding the cup to speak and listen (no swapping: building is big sister's, phoning is little sister's). Play a "pass-it-on" game: big sister whispers a sentence at one end, little sister listens and runs to tell Dad, and everyone laughs at what it turned into by the end.

The Why + a Twist

The cup phone is really a "relay of vibration": your voice shakes the thin skin at the cup's bottom, the taut string carries that shake all the way across, and the far cup's bottom shakes it back into sound. The key is that the string must be taut—slack, or pinched, and the shaking can't get through, which is also why a real phone line can't be knotted into a tangle. Twist: splice a third cup into the middle of one line for a "three-way call," or run the string around a doorframe to turn a corner and see if it still works.

Prep & Safety

Materials: 5–8 identical glasses (or glass bottles), a jug of water, a chopstick or small spoon as a beater, optionally a few drops of food coloring to make the water pretty. Pour water into a row of glasses left to right: the first nearly full, the last with just a splash, the middle ones stepping down one notch at a time. Tap the rims gently and you'll hear more water = lower note, less water = higher note. Fine-tune the water levels and you can dial in a "do re mi fa sol" scale and tap out the opening of "Twinkle, Twinkle."

Safety: Glass breaks—set the glasses in the middle of the table, not near the edge, and tap gently; hard tapping cracks them. If one breaks, an adult clears it and bare-footed kids leave first. Give the 3-year-old unbreakable cups (plastic sounds worse but is safe), or let her only tap glasses that are already set out, not carry them around. Wipe spills right away so no one slips.

Her job: "tap + hear high and low." Take the chopstick and tap down the row, hearing "bong, ding, ding—" climb higher, then bang away at random and compose her own tune. She also pours the water in (with a small jug, any amount goes—that's exactly what makes the different pitches), and pouring is something she can do forever.

Age 9

Her job: "tune it." Add water drop by drop or pour a little out to tune each glass into a singable "do re mi fa sol," then take on tapping the opening of "Twinkle, Twinkle" or "Happy Birthday." Challenge question: same glasses—why does more water sound lower and less water higher? (You're ringing the glass and its water together; more water is heavier and shakes slower, so a lower note; less water shakes faster, so higher.)

Sisters Together

Big sister is the "tuner," fine-tuning water levels and putting the scale in order; little sister is the "player," tapping them one by one in the order big sister points to (no swapping: tuning and ordering is big sister's, following the cue and tapping is little sister's). Perform together: big sister points a finger to glass after glass as the "sheet music," little sister taps wherever she points, and together they finish "Twinkle, Twinkle" as a concert for Mom and Dad.

The Why + a Twist

When you tap a glass, the glass wall and the water inside vibrate together to make the sound. More water means the whole thing is heavier and shakes slower, and slow shaking sounds like a low note; less water is lighter, shakes faster, and sounds high—instruments follow the same idea, with thick long strings low and thin short ones high. Twist: switch it up and blow across the bottle mouth instead of tapping, and you'll find the result flips—now it's the air inside vibrating, so more water means less air and a higher note. Let the 9-year-old chew on that reversal.

4. Blindfold Listening GamesBlindfold Listening Games

Prep & Safety

Nothing to build—just your ears. Materials: a cloth or eye mask, a few everyday things that make sound (keys, crinkling paper, pouring beans, tapping a cup, tearing tape, zipping a zipper). Three games: ① Guess the sound: blindfolded, they hear you make a sound and guess what it is. ② Find the sound: one person stands blindfolded in the middle while another circles them clapping softly or shaking a bell, and the blindfolded one points toward where the sound came from. ③ Sound memory: make 3–4 sounds in a row and have them repeat the order.

Safety: Play "find the sound" in an open space with no sharp-cornered furniture; the blindfolded person only turns in place, never runs, and someone stays beside them to guard against bumps and falls. Don't put shrill, loud sounds like whistles or popping balloons right by an ear—it can harm hearing. Keep an eye that the 3-year-old doesn't swallow the small noisemakers (beans, keys).

Age 3

Her job: "guess the sound." Blindfolded (or just eyes closed if she won't wear it), she listens to you crinkle paper, jingle keys, clap, and shouts her guess "It's the keys!"—getting it right makes her very proud. Pick sounds she knows well: the doorbell recording, Dad coughing, the cat meowing; the more familiar, the easier the win and the bigger the thrill.

Age 9

Her challenge: "sound memory + locating." Repeat 4 sounds in order, or point exactly to where a clap came from, then ramp it up: use only one ear (cover the other) to find the sound and discover it's much harder. Challenge question: blindfolded, how do you know which side a sound comes from? (The same sound reaches your two ears with a tiny difference in timing and loudness, and your brain uses that difference to work out the direction—cover one ear and the "difference" is gone, so you can't pin it down.)

Sisters Together

Take turns as "quizmaster" and "guesser": big sister goes first (making sounds, circling with a bell), little sister blindfolded guesses and points; then switch, and little sister makes up her own sounds for big sister to guess (no swapping mid-round: one makes the sound, one is blindfolded, then trade roles). Little sister's puzzles tend to be wonderfully wild, so big sister has to listen hard—back and forth, both of them prick their ears way up.

The Why + a Twist

We have two ears not just for symmetry—a sound reaches the two ears with a tiny difference in timing and loudness, and the brain crunches that difference to tell whether the sound is left or right, front or back. This is called "binaural localization." Cover one ear and you lose half the clues, so direction goes fuzzy at once. Twist: play "sound treasure hunt"—hide a still-ringing phone or alarm somewhere in the room and let the blindfolded child feel their way to it step by step, using sound alone.

Just Pick One This Week

If you only want to do one, easiest thing—go with Blindfold Listening Games. Nothing to build, buy, or clean up: a cloth plus whatever's on hand—keys, paper, a cup—and you're off, any ten minutes after dinner or before bed.
