The Civilization Didn't Vanish — Its Readers Did

"Forgotten" sounds like natural decay. But in the four episodes below the bricks, the stone walls, the sailing route and the knotted cords are all still here. What was lost is the reading — and each time the reading was cut, it traces back to a specific decision.

While building the Lahore–Multan railway in 1856, the Brunton brothers found a mound of ancient brick and quarried it for ballast, laying a hundred kilometres of track bed on it — that was Harappa. In 1921–22 Sahni and Banerji opened Harappa and Mohenjo-daro respectively; on 20 September 1924, John Marshall, Director-General of the Archaeological Survey of India, announced that the Indus valley held an unknown civilization contemporary with Mesopotamia.

What it left behind is deeply anomalous. Roughly four thousand inscribed objects, averaging about five signs, the longest seventeen; no bilingual object, no royal tombs, no king lists. What it did leave is a different category of thing: Mohenjo-daro's city-wide drainage, standardized bricks in a strict 1:2:4 ratio, and chert cube weights distributed from the Punjab to the coast of Oman — base unit about 0.86 g, doubling 1:2:4:8, barely drifting across a thousand kilometres. A state that spent its resources on metrology and sanitation rather than on monuments happened to route around every decipherment tool the nineteenth century possessed, all of which depended on bilinguals and royal names.

Had the Harappans also carved their rulers' names into stone, the 1924 framework could have caught the civilization on the spot. But the real dispute cuts deeper: Asko Parpola's Deciphering the Indus Script (1994) holds that the signs record an early Dravidian language; Farmer, Sproat and Witzel (2004) argue it is not writing at all but non-linguistic marking — clan emblems, commodity tags — and five signs on average really does look too short to carry a sentence. The disagreement is not about how hard decipherment is, but about whether there is any utterance here waiting to be read.

Observability design: the metrics you chose to emit determine how deep a postmortem can go. Whatever is not in the logs did not, after the fact, happen.

What a civilization leaves depends less on how strong it was than on what it chose to record.

The German geologist Karl Mauch reached Great Zimbabwe in 1871 and pronounced it the palace of the Queen of Sheba. In the 1890s Cecil Rhodes's company took over the site, and Richard Nicklin Hall, between 1902 and 1904, stripped several feet of deposit wholesale from inside the enclosures under the heading of "clearing later occupation layers."

In 1905 the Egyptologist David Randall-MacIver, sent by the British Association, excavated and published Mediaeval Rhodesia the following year: the building technique and the finds belonged to a local African tradition. In 1929 Gertrude Caton-Thompson re-examined the site with rigorous stratigraphic method and reached the same conclusion — locally built, flourishing roughly in the twelfth to fifteenth centuries. The evidence was already sufficient in 1905, and in the hundred and twenty years since, no contrary empirical finding has appeared. Yet after the unilateral declaration of independence in 1965, the Rhodesian government made local origin a taboo: Peter Garlake, Senior Inspector of Monuments, resigned and left the country in 1970 for holding to that conclusion, and official guides were required to preserve the possibility of "foreign builders."

Would colonial-era African history have been rewritten if the 1906 report had simply been accepted? Probably not — the problem was never insufficient evidence but that the evidence was not wanted. What is genuinely irreversible is the deposit Hall shovelled away: once the stratigraphy is gone, the chronology and the distribution of trade goods can never be finely reconstructed, and today we can only infer the site's place in the monsoon trade network from radiocarbon dates and scattered remains (Chinese celadon, Persian ceramics, Indian Ocean glass beads). The live debate has shifted to function: Garlake read it as a royal ceremonial centre, while Chirikure and Pikirayi treat it as one node in a polycentric network that moved with cattle, salt and gold.

Log scrubbing in compliance audits: a foregone conclusion can still be corrected, but deleted primary records cannot — no amount of subsequent methodological rigour restores them.

Destroying evidence is more thorough than falsifying conclusions, because it takes away the ground rebuttal would have to stand on.

The Knowledge Wasn't in the Archive; It Was in One Fresh ExecutionHōkūleʻa Sails to Tahiti · 1 May 1976

Andrew Sharp's Ancient Voyagers in the Pacific (1956) laid down a hard claim: long-distance settlement of the Pacific could only have been accidental drift, and deliberate navigation was impossible. The anthropologist Ben Finney had been running voyaging-canoe reconstruction experiments since the 1960s and founded the Polynesian Voyaging Society in 1973. The obstacle was that Hawaiʻi's navigational lineage had long since been broken: no living person knew how to do it.

They eventually found Mau Piailug (1932–2010) of Satawal in Micronesia, one of the very few still actively using the etak star-path system. On 1 May 1976 the reconstructed double-hulled canoe Hōkūleʻa left Maui; carrying no instruments, Mau navigated by star positions, the phase relations of swells, and the direction of seabirds returning at dusk, reaching Papeete in Tahiti on 4 June. This did not uncover new evidence; it re-ran a procedure. The cost was not romantic: crew conflict broke out before the return leg and Mau left the ship; in 1978 Hōkūleʻa capsized and crew member Eddie Aikau was lost paddling a surfboard for help. Mau nevertheless went on to teach the whole system to the Hawaiian Nainoa Thompson, breaking Satawal's rule against passing it to outsiders — not passing it on meant losing it entirely.

Had the 1976 voyage failed, drift theory would have held the textbooks a few years longer, but the reversal would still have come: Geoffrey Irwin (1992) showed by simulation that exploring east against the trade winds is precisely the rational strategy — leaving upwind means you can always run home downwind, and the decisive variable in exploration is returnability, not courage. The argument has since moved to timescale: Wilmshurst et al. (2011) used high-precision radiocarbon to compress the settlement of East Polynesia into two or three centuries around 1200 CE.

Knowledge that exists only in execution: however complete the documentation, it is worth less than having someone who can still do it run the legacy migration once more.

On 16 November 1532, Pizarro and some hundred and sixty men seized Atahualpa at Cajamarca. The Inca state had no writing in our sense; its administration ran on the knotted-cord quipu and the hereditary cord-keepers, the khipukamayuq: labour levies, population, storehouses and genealogies were all encoded in the position, direction and colour of knots.

In the early conquest the Spanish used the system: in 1542 Vaca de Castro convened cord-keepers to dictate a chronicle, and in colonial courts of the 1560s Andean lords itemized requisitioned goods from quipus and were believed. The turn came in 1583, when the Third Council of Lima declared quipus idolatrous objects and ordered them destroyed; in the same years Viceroy Toledo's reducción policy forcibly consolidated scattered villages into new towns, severing the hereditary training chain of the cord-keeping families. What burned was cord; what was lost was the reading. Around a thousand quipus survive today, and Gary Urton's database confirms that many encode decimal values; but whether narrative quipus carry non-numerical information, nobody can read — this is the only recording system for which we hold a large body of originals and not a single reader.

Had the Spanish transcribed systematically as they did in Mexico — Aztec pictorial manuscripts were copied into the Codex Mendoza with Spanish glosses and remain legible — we could probably read quipus. The difference is not colonial brutality but where the reading was lodged: scribes could be hired and supervised, whereas quipu literacy was bound to the hereditary authority of cord-keeping families, so once the administrative hierarchy was dismantled the reading lapsed with the organization. The scholarly split follows the same line: Urton argues the quipu is a sign system capable of encoding language, while Galen Brokaw's A History of the Khipu (2010) is more conservative — the surviving corpus is overwhelmingly accounting, and possibility should not be mistaken for knowledge.

Proprietary formats and decommissioned runtimes: the tape is intact and the bits are fine, but the environment and the people who could decode it are gone — which amounts to nothing.

Whether a record can be read depends on whether the organization that reads it still exists, not on how durable the medium is.

1. Why does "forgetting" almost always happen at the reading layer rather than the medium layer?
Stone, fired brick and cotton cord all survived millennia. The fragile part is the living knowledge that turns signs back into meaning — it exists only in a chain of human training, and that chain hangs on an organization. Break the organization, skip a generation, or never map the system to an external framework, and the medium degrades into mere object. The test is simple: how many mutually independent people hold the reading?
2. Which predicament is closer to modern systems — Harappa's or the quipu's?
The quipu's. Harappa never established a mapping to the outside and is unsolvable by construction; the quipu's mapping existed and was deliberately severed, which makes it an avoidable loss. That is exactly how modern systems die: the format is documented, people understand it, and then those people leave and that environment is retired — five years later the data is a quipu.
3. Why does Hōkūleʻa's re-execution count as evidence, and where are its methodological limits?
It proves feasibility, not historical fact — Mau used a Micronesian system, and the canoe was a reconstruction. Its strict function was to retire an impossibility claim and push the burden of proof back onto drift theory. That is the general boundary of replication experiments: they can kill "it couldn't be done," never "it wasn't done." The historical conclusion still has to come from radiocarbon sequences and ceramic distributions.
4. If you wrote all four as one model, what are the variables?
What dimensions were recorded × how many people hold the reading × whether a mapping to an external framework was ever built × whether the medium can be destroyed unilaterally. The second is the one most often overlooked: lose the author and the record survives; lose the reader and the record is worth zero on the spot. Any long-horizon archive design should first ask what the redundancy of readers is, and only then how many years the medium lasts.
