Four Times Words Got Cheaper

The through-line of writing's history isn't what got written — it's what a copy cost. Each order-of-magnitude drop swapped out the gatekeepers: from temple accountants to paper mills, from typefounders to licensing censors. Four scenes, four transfers of power.

The earliest tablets from Uruk level IV are, more than nine in ten, ration and inventory lists: so much barley, so many sheep, issued to whom. Denise Schmandt-Besserat (Before Writing, 1992) argued the signs descend from earlier clay tokens: tokens were sealed inside a clay bulla, whose surface was impressed so the contents could be read without breaking it — and the impressions eventually replaced the tokens themselves. Critics (Zimansky, 1993) find that chain drawn too straight.

The decisive step was the rebus principle: the sign for "arrow" (Sumerian ti) was borrowed to write the similar-sounding "life" (til). Once signs attach to sound, you can write personal names, negations, and "if." Around 2285 BCE Enheduanna — daughter of Sargon of Akkad and high priestess of the moon god at Ur — wrote her own name and predicament into The Exaltation of Inanna, appealing to the goddess after a revolt drove her from the temple. She is the earliest author known by name: an accounting tool took a millennium to carry a first person.

Had writing stayed pictographic tallying, contracts, treaties and wills would have been unwritable — their substance is names, conditions and negation, precisely what accounting signs cannot express. The live dispute is about origins: were the scripts of Egypt, China and Mesoamerica independent inventions, or did the idea that writing is possible travel trade routes while each culture rebuilt the signs? The latter is nearly impossible to falsify archaeologically, and stays unresolved.

Fields come before questions. The day a logging schema is fixed, so is most of what you can analyze for the next three years — a dimension you never recorded cannot be interrogated later.

The ceiling on what can be expressed is set by the record format, not by the desire to express.

In July 751 the Tang commander of Anxi, Gao Xianzhi, was beaten at Talas by Abbasid forces and the Karluk contingent that defected mid-battle. Du Huan, captured with the army, spent over a decade in West Asia and on returning wrote Jingxingji, recording Chinese craftsmen working there in silk, gold- and silverwork, and painting. Tellingly, he never mentions papermaking — the widely repeated claim that prisoners of war carried the craft westward rests on remarkably thin evidence.

In 793–794, under Barmakid sponsorship, a paper mill was established in Baghdad and the chancery switched to paper. The cost gap was decisive: a parchment Bible required roughly 200 animal skins, while paper cut a book's material cost by an order of magnitude or more. Ninth-century Baghdad grew an entire booksellers' quarter (al-Warrāqīn) with hundreds of copying and selling shops, contemporaneous with the Greek translation movement. Jonathan Bloom (Paper Before Print, 2001) concludes that Samarkand shows signs of papermaking before 751: paper moved west by decades of commercial diffusion, not as war booty.

Had paper reached the Islamic world two centuries later, the Arabic translation of Greek philosophy and medicine would have been far smaller in scale, and the chain that carried it back into Europe through twelfth-century Toledo correspondingly thinner — Europe's timetable for rereading Aristotle shifts later as a whole. The counter-doubt holds too: demand finds routes, and Byzantium always had parchment, merely expensive. So the disagreement reduces to whether paper was a necessary condition or an accelerant; most scholars now say accelerant.

Storage and bandwidth curves decide what is worth keeping. Retaining every log line, hosting video for free — both are downstream of the same curve. Nobody had a revelation; it just got cheap.

Gutenberg Didn't Win on Printing — He Won on Replicable TypeGutenberg's Press · Mainz, 1450–1455

Around 1450 Johannes Gutenberg borrowed from the merchant Johann Fust to set up his workshop; in 1455 Fust sued for repayment and won, taking the equipment and type with his son-in-law Peter Schöfferthe inventor lost his own shop. The 42-line Bible ran to roughly 180 copies. Movable type was not new: Bi Sheng's clay type in Song China dates to about 1040, and the Korean Jikji was printed with metal type in 1377, some seventy years before Mainz.

The real combinatorial invention was the punch-and-matrix system: a steel punch cut once, struck into a copper matrix, then cast in a lead-tin-antimony alloy into hundreds of identical sorts. Add oil-based ink, a screw press adapted from wine production, and an alphabet of only two dozen letters, and the economics work. Thousands of Chinese characters change that arithmetic entirely — woodblock was simply cheaper for reprinting the same book, which is why movable type never displaced it in East Asia. A constraint, not an oversight.

Elizabeth Eisenstein (The Printing Press as an Agent of Change, 1979) held that print brought "fixity," a precondition for the Reformation and the Scientific Revolution. Adrian Johns (The Nature of the Book, 1998) countered that early printed books teemed with piracy and error, and that credibility was built up piecemeal by stationers' guilds, errata sheets and authorial reputation — a social institution, not a property of the machine. The counterfactual tightens things further: Gutenberg's most profitable product was indulgences. Without the 1517 indulgence controversy and Luther's insistence on writing pamphlets in German (selling in the hundreds of thousands over the following years), the press might long have remained a business in Latin devotional goods.

Generative tools compress the marginal cost of content once more, and credibility again does not come bundled. Provenance, attribution and review have to be rebuilt — we are living in the piracy-and-error phase Johns described.

Technologies that cut the cost of copying do not produce trustworthiness; that is an institution built afterwards.

In 1559 Pope Paul IV promulgated the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, made a standing institution by the Council of Trent in 1564 and abolished only in 1966: Copernicus's De revolutionibus was suspended "pending correction" in 1616, and Galileo tried in 1633. England took another route — prior approval. The 1643 Licensing Order required a licence before printing; Milton answered in 1644 with Areopagitica. His argument was not that speech is harmless, but that no censor could possibly have the judgement required, or stay uncorrupted.

The turn came in 1695, when Parliament simply let the Licensing Act lapse. Raymond Astbury (1978) showed the decisive factors were not Miltonic principle — the debates barely cite him — but that the Stationers' Company had used licensing to monopolize copyright and infuriated provincial printers, while Whigs and Tories each refused to let the other hold the censor's pen. Principle supplied the language; conflicting interests supplied the motive. English output surged afterwards, and in 1710 the Statute of Anne replaced licences with copyright.

Had the Act been renewed, the forbidden-book trade would simply have moved: Amsterdam and Geneva were already Europe's presses for banned titles. Robert Darnton's work on the clandestine book trade of late-ancien-régime France shows censorship cultivated a cross-border smuggling network of bestsellers — the ban reshaped the industry's geography rather than extinguishing demand. But "censorship never works" is equally wrong: compliance costs change what authors choose to write, and that loss leaves no trace, so it is systematically underestimated.

Control has shifted from whether something may be printed to whether it can be distributed. Beyond removal there is demotion — which produces no visible index of banned books, and is therefore far harder to measure or appeal.

Judge a restriction not by what it deleted, but by what never got written.

1. Every cost collapse moved control from production to distribution. How does that rule extend into the AI era?
The marginal cost of writing and illustration is near zero, so scarcity has migrated entirely to the entrances to attention: ranking, retrieval indexes, default models. The historical analogue is England after 1695 — licensing gone, the Stationers' Company keeping its influence through copyright and distribution instead. Control did not vanish; it relocated. So the sharper question about any new technology is not who may produce, but who decides what gets seen.
2. What is the methodological lesson of the Eisenstein–Johns dispute for judging new technology?
Eisenstein reasons from a technology's properties to social consequences; Johns points out those properties were themselves manufactured by institutions. The safer stance treats technology as shifting costs and the boundary of the possible, and assigns actual outcomes to the institutional contest that follows. Applied now: rising model capability will not automatically yield a more reliable information environment — that depends on how fast provenance, accountability and review get built. Technological determinism's failing is compressing decades of institution-building into a single causal clause.
3. Is the type economics of Chinese characters versus alphabets a textbook case of path dependence?
Yes, but mind the direction. Thousands of characters make casting and sorting expensive, and woodblock was cheaper for reprinting the same title — a rational cost choice, not backwardness. The path dependence comes later: choosing woodblock means never accumulating the metallurgy of punches or the division of labour in composition, so when fast pamphlet printing is suddenly needed, the switching cost is high. The hidden price of a technical choice usually isn't on the current ledger; it's the capability you never developed.
4. Why is the loss from self-censorship so hard to measure, and can it be seen another way?
Because its product is a non-event — the unwritten book, the unraised proposal — which enters no statistic. Three proxies exist: the output gap for the same author across jurisdictions; the difference in topic distribution between anonymous and identified channels; and the subjects that surge right after a ban lifts, roughly the suppressed backlog. Structurally identical to incident analysis: counting only reported failures systematically underestimates the ones nobody dared file.
