Day 19 · 语言学

EN English blue covers the whole range; Russian forces a choice between голубой (goluboy, light blue) and синий (siniy, dark blue), with no neutral superordinate. Winawer et al. (2007) used a wordless task: three patches, pick which of the lower two matches the top one. Russian speakers were faster on cross-category pairs than within-category pairs; English speakers on identical stimuli showed no such difference, and the effect grew as discrimination got harder. Crucially, a concurrent verbal load (holding a digit string) abolished the advantage while a spatial load did not — so it is language participating online, not different eyes. The effect is tens of milliseconds. Martinovic, Paramei & MacInnes (2020) re-ran the same task twice and found no cross-boundary advantage in reaction times, plus evidence that the siniy/goluboy boundary itself shifts with stimulus frequency and order. On the Himba of Namibia: the published work (Roberson et al.) shows no enhanced discrimination at the blue–green boundary their language does not mark, but the enhancement does appear at boundaries it does mark. The viral "they cannot spot the blue square" demo comes from a 2011 television documentary and matches no experiment in the literature.

有一群人从来不说「左边」

「杯子在书的左边」这句话里藏着一个你平时不会注意的东西:左边是谁的左边。换个座位,同一个场景就得换一种说法。这套以说话人视角为轴的坐标叫相对参照框架(frame of reference,即以什么为基准算方位)。

澳大利亚昆士兰 Hopevale 社区的 Guugu Yimithirr 语不用它。这门语言有四个方位词根——gungga(北)、naga(东)、jibarr(南)、guwa(西)——所有关于位置和移动的话都要用它们的变化形式。

EN "The cup is to the left of the book" hides a question: whose left? That is the relative frame of reference. Guugu Yimithirr, spoken at Hopevale in Queensland, does not use it: four direction roots — gungga (north), naga (east), jibarr (south), guwa (west) — carry all talk of location and motion, so it is "the ant north of you", not "the ant on your left". Tzeltal, a Mayan language of Tenejapa in Chiapas, uses terrain instead: ajk'ol "uphill" (roughly south there), alan "downhill" (roughly north), jejch "across" — the same system for a coin on a table and a village kilometres away. Speaking such a language means always knowing where north is. Levinson and colleagues used a wordless task: reproduce a row of animals on a second table across the room after a delay, either preserving "left-to-right for me" or preserving "actually facing north". Guugu Yimithirr and Tzeltal participants favoured the latter, Dutch participants the former. Li & Gleitman (2002) then ran the same table task with American students, varying only the laboratory blinds: with blinds down most chose the relative solution; with blinds up or outdoors they split roughly half and half, and about 70% in those conditions asked which solution was wanted, against 20% with blinds down. Levinson et al. replied that this conflates the geocentric and the object-centred frame; Li et al. (2011) later failed to reproduce absolute dominance in Tzeltal with different rotation tasks. What survives: the frame is calibrated by environmental cues and habit, and language's role is to make one of them obligatory, forcing you to maintain a bearing estimate at all times.

EN Time has no direction of its own, yet you can barely talk about it without borrowing space. English says "the week ahead"; Mandarin says 上周 (shàng zhōu, literally "up week", meaning last week) and 下周 (xià zhōu, literally "down week", meaning next week) — a vertical axis for the same thing. Boroditsky (2001) reported that English and Mandarin speakers are primed differently by spatial cues in temporal judgements; Chen (2007, four attempts), January & Kako (2007, six experiments) and Tse & Altarriba (2008) all failed to replicate, and Chen noted that horizontal time expressions are in fact more frequent in Mandarin than vertical ones. Boroditsky, Fuhrman & McCormick (2011) switched to a non-linguistic task, having people place time points in the three-dimensional space around them: both groups showed a left-to-right axis matching writing direction, only Mandarin speakers also showed a vertical one. Aymara, of the Bolivian and Peruvian highlands, uses nayra ("eye, front, sight") for the past and qhipa ("back, behind") for the future; Núñez & Sweetser (2006) recorded gestures as well as words, with speakers pointing forward for the past and flicking backward for the future — plausibly tied to the language's evidential marking, which requires saying whether you witnessed an event. The cleanest evidence is Boroditsky & Gaby (2010): Kuuk Thaayorre speakers at Pormpuraaw, handed shuffled cards of a man ageing, a crocodile growing and a banana being eaten, laid them out east to west — left to right when facing south, right to left when the same person turned to face north, toward the body when facing east. Nobody mentioned direction. Wordless task, each participant serving as their own control, and a layout unlike any previously documented, all of which had been body-relative.

🎒 场景 · BigCat
