Science can explain everything the brain does — everything except why, while it does those things, "somebody's home."
The first nine issues were all the same kind of job: take a function and find its mechanism — how seeing is really guessing, how attention is tuned, how memory is stored, how a decision gets made. All of it "how does the brain-machine do some thing," pulled apart layer by layer until you hit neurons — and then it counts as explained. But there's one thing this kind of taking-apart never seems to reach: why does any of it feel like something? Why isn't seeing red just current running quietly through a black box — why is there actual redness there for you? Why isn't pain just "the body reported damage" — why does it actually hurt? The philosopher David Chalmers gave this cliff a name: the hard problem of consciousness. This issue won't solve it (nobody can), but seeing clearly what it is will reset your sense of where science can reach — and where it can't.
First sort the questions into two piles, or the whole issue turns into a brawl. Chalmers points out there's a whole row of easy problems about consciousness: how the brain tells red from green, how it binds scattered signals into one scene, how it reports its own states ("I see it"), how it switches between asleep and awake, how it focuses attention on one thing. Note — "easy" doesn't mean simple; each of these could keep generations busy. They're "easy" in exactly one respect: you know what an answer would look like — namely, find some neural mechanism that shows how the function gets pulled off. That's precisely what the first nine issues did.
There's only one hard problem, and it isn't in that row: even if you aced every easy problem — every circuit, every spike labeled and mapped — something still seems left over. Why isn't all this exquisite information-processing happening in total darkness? Why is it experienced at all? What entitles any machine, however intricate, to have "the lights on inside"? That "why is there experience" is the thing that won't pop out on its own no matter how deep you push the mechanism.
The thing that puts the hard problem in your hand has a name in philosophy: qualia — what an experience is like from the inside: the red of red, the hurt of pain, that bitter hit of coffee on the tongue. It has a strange temperament. You're 100% certain it's there (right now you're flooded with some visual experience, and that fact is harder to doubt than any scientific conclusion), yet you can't hand it over — there's no sentence that would make a person blind from birth truly "get" what red is like.
A famous thought experiment corners the point: Mary's room (Frank Jackson, 1982). Mary is a world-class color scientist who has spent her whole life raised in a purely black-and-white room, studying the world only through grayscale screens. She has learned every physical fact about color — which wavelength, which retinal cells, which brain areas light up, all of it. One day the door opens and she sees, for the first time, a real red apple.
Here's the question: does she learn something new? Almost everyone's gut says "of course — she finally knows what red looks like!" But if she already possessed every physical fact about color and yet could still learn something the instant the door opened, then that "something new" isn't on the physical list. Qualia look like a residue beyond every objective description. (Of course, there's a rebuttal: she didn't learn a new fact, she just met the same old fact in a new way — firsthand. That fight is far from settled on either side.)
What neuroscience does best is find correlations: which area lights up in pain, which network runs during dreams, which signal collapses first when consciousness is lost. Suppose one day we nail it all down — "whenever neural state X occurs, there's the experience of red," a lockstep law, iron-tight. That would crack even the toughest of the easy problems. But Joseph Levine (1983) added a chilling line: even if the correlation holds 100%, you still haven't explained "why." Why does this neural state go with the experience of red rather than green — or with nothing at all? That seam he called the explanatory gap.
A comparison shows how strange the seam is. "Water is H₂O" — once you know the molecular structure, why water flows, freezes, dissolves salt is all automatically explained, with no leftover question. But "pain is neural state X" — spell X out to the finest detail and the question "what entitles it to hurt" sits there, untouched. Every other scientific explanation digests its "why" completely; only at experience does the mechanism arrive, the correlation arrive, and "why is there feeling" stay in the mouth like something you can't chew or swallow.
The hard problem has no agreed answer, but it isn't chaos either — the positions line up on a spectrum, from "there's no such thing" all the way to "consciousness is the basic stuff of the universe." Knowing where you stand, and where others stand, is far more useful than memorizing labels.
On the far left sits illusionism (Dennett, Frankish): the so-called "extra qualia" are a cognitive illusion — the brain's introspective system files a false report that makes us think there's an ineffable "inner light," when all that's really there, taken apart, is functions. What actually needs explaining isn't consciousness but "why we stubbornly feel there's a hard problem." A step right is plain physicalism: experience just is some physical process, and the gap is a temporary illusion born of incomplete knowledge.
The right half won't concede. Property dualism (Chalmers himself) says: experience is a further basic fact about the world — like mass or charge, it has to be listed separately, and a physical inventory that omits it is incomplete. Further right is panpsychism (Goff): rather than say consciousness "poofs" into being at some evolutionary step (how does a heap of feelingless atoms suddenly feel?), say a speck of experience is a basic property of matter, present everywhere, and the brain merely assembles it large — sounds mystical, yet it has been seriously revived in the last decade. And off to one side is mysterianism (McGinn): the problem is real, but maybe, like a dog that can't learn calculus, a mind like ours is simply built unable to solve it.
"Why is there experience at all" is a cliff several traditions have circled for millennia — long before there was an fMRI or a name for the thought experiment:
