The Default Mode NetworkDefault Mode Network

A set of brain regions that are busiest precisely when you're doing nothing — spacing out, mind-wandering. Almost everything it handles is "about me" — recalling the past, imagining the future, guessing what others think — so it's often called the brain's "me" network, the projector screening "the story of me."

It's "task-negative": the idler you are, the brighter it gets

Most brain networks act only when you put them to work. The default mode network is the reverse: the moment you focus on an external task (doing sums, watching the road) it quiets down; the moment you space out, daydream, let thoughts drift, it lights up as a whole. Someone once noticed that in the gaps when subjects "did nothing" in the scanner, the same batch of regions was reliably more active — not noise, but the brain's "default setting."

medial PFC "about me" · value PCC / precuneus hub · autobiography angular / TPJ ToM · viewpoint lateral temporal semantics · concepts hippocampal formation memory retrieval · episodes hub = PCC
Core nodes of the default mode network: the PCC/precuneus as hub, wiring together self, memory and theory of mind
Medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC)
Processes "about me" information: my preferences, my personality, this thing's value to me. The workhorse of self-referential processing.
Posterior cingulate / precuneus (PCC / precuneus)
The hub of the whole network, metabolically very costly. Links autobiographical memory with self-perspective; how strongly it's active is nearly a dial for "how deep you are in self-narrative."
Angular gyrus / temporoparietal junction (TPJ)
Theory of mind and perspective-taking — "what would others think," "looking out from my position."
Hippocampal formation
Pulls up past episodes and uses the same parts to construct imagined futures — memory and "future rehearsal" share this hardware.

It's a see-saw with the "focus network"

The default mode network and the dorsal attention network that handles external focus are broadly anti-correlated: one bright, the other dim. This explains an everyday experience — when you mind-wander (DMN online), you go dull to the road ahead and to what people are saying (attention network offline); conversely, in deep focus that chattering "inner monologue" briefly vanishes. Flow is partly the self-narrative projector being overridden by the task and temporarily dimmed.

Why it's central to "the self," "meditation," and the clinic

Because it's nearly the neural substrate of self-narrative, and modulating it modulates "I":

The self and ego dissolution
Deep meditation and psychedelics like psilocybin both down-regulate / disintegrate this network, and the intensity of reported "no-self" and "oneness" tracks its drop in activity near-proportionally — the most direct evidence that "the self is computed" (main track, Topic 17).
Depression and rumination
Depression often comes with DMN hyperactivity / hyperconnectivity: the unstoppable "rumination" — chewing over "why am I so terrible" — is exactly this projector stuck spinning on a negative self-narrative.
Alzheimer's
Early AD pathology and atrophy overlap heavily with the core regions of the default mode network (especially the PCC/precuneus) — a clue tied to its being metabolically costly, the most "expensive," and among the first to fail.
