Prefrontal CortexPrefrontal Cortex

The sheet of cortex right behind your forehead — the brain's conductor. It doesn't so much store content as hold the goal up, set priorities, and hold the line against impulse. Our capacity to plan, to wait, to juggle several things at once rides largely on it — and it's also the region that matures last, ages first, and fears stress most.

Where it is, and its rough divisions

The prefrontal cortex is the large frontmost stretch of the frontal lobe, sitting just behind your forehead. It's not one uniform slab; functionally it splits into a few regions, each minding its own patch:

Dorsolateral · dlPFC
The most "rational" patch: working memory's persistent firing, planning, abstract reasoning, and rule-following all rely on it. The delay-period activity of "the thing is gone yet still held" is recorded mainly here.
Ventromedial / orbital · vmPFC / OFC
Handles value and emotion: scoring options for "is it worth it," regulating feeling, folding bodily signals into decisions. Damage it and a person can become able to calculate clearly, yet unable to choose well.
Anterior cingulate · ACC
The "conflict monitor" tucked deep on the medial wall: the moment two responses clash, or you're about to err, it raises the alarm and recruits more control. (Strictly, the ACC is often listed separately, but it works hand in glove with the prefrontal cortex.)

What it does: executive function

Bundle everything the prefrontal cortex does into one word and it's executive function — the "project manager" in your head. It produces no specific sensation or movement; instead it coordinates the other brain regions, making behavior obey the current goal rather than getting yanked around by whatever's in front of you. The core is roughly three things:

① Maintenance — keeping goals and information "held up" without scattering (working memory's persistent firing, the classic finding of Fuster and Goldman-Rakic). ② Inhibition — resisting impulse, ignoring irrelevant distraction (the thing that stays your hand as it reaches for a second slice of cake). ③ Switching — flexibly changing gears between tasks/rules without getting stuck on the old one. Planning, sequencing, and error-correction are all built out of these three.

Late to mature, early to fade, most afraid of stress

Three features with real-world bite:

Late to mature — the prefrontal cortex is the last part of the whole brain to finish wiring up, with myelination continuing until around age 25. That's why adolescents are impulsive and struggle to suppress immediate temptation: not "being difficult," but a brake that isn't fully installed yet.

Early to fade — it's also among the first regions to decline with age, so "the word on the tip of the tongue" and "juggling several things gets muddled" tend to surface here first.

Afraid of stress — under acute stress, stress hormones (noradrenaline, cortisol) directly weaken the prefrontal cortex and hand control back to the more primitive amygdala. That's why anxiety makes your "mind go blank," and why you underperform exactly when it matters most — the fragile firing that props up working memory gets scattered by stress on the spot.
