He was fourteen. It was his birthday. Outside, a thunderstorm.
A glowing sphere the size of a basketball drifted in through the window, unhurried, as though someone were pushing it gently along, hung above the dinner table for a moment, and broke apart. The sound was very soft.
Almost everything in the room was still where it had been: the table, the chairs, his father's watercolours on the wall. Only the two people who had been talking to him a moment earlier were now two heaps of ash.

This page contains complete spoilers—including what ball lightning actually is, what happens to the twenty-seven children, what Lin Yun does at the end, and what was once in that empty vase. The premise of this site is that everything worth discussing lies past the ending; without the ending you can only discuss atmosphere. If you want to keep the suspense, read the novel first—this page will wait.

In one sentence

A man whose parents were taken from him by ball lightning on his fourteenth birthday spends his life determining what the thing is; the answer is that it is an electron the size of a basketball, and that everything it has ever "burned"—his parents, his mentor's wife, twenty-seven child hostages in a counterterrorist operation, and finally the woman officer who turned it into a weapon—did not vanish at all. It merely became probability.

Coordinates

Liu Cixin (b. 1963) was an engineer at a power plant in Shanxi who wrote science fiction on the side. Ball Lightning was written in 2001, released in 2004 through the Science Fiction World anthology line, and published as a standalone book by Sichuan Science and Technology Press in June 2005—which is to say, before The Three-Body Problem. Bookshops now print it as a "Three-Body prequel"; that label was attached afterwards. It does share the physicist Ding Yi and the macro-atom apparatus with the trilogy, but it was written first and reads perfectly well alone.

Its place in Liu's body of work is unusual: this is his only novel that starts from a real unsolved mystery. Ball lightning is not his invention. Two centuries of eyewitness accounts describe the same thing—a luminous sphere appearing during thunderstorms, able to pass through walls, to drift near the ground, to vanish silently in front of you, and occasionally to burn whatever it seems to have singled out. Meteorology still has no agreed account of how it forms. What Liu did was dig down through that genuine blank spot until he hit something big enough to hold a novel.

The story

Act one · A birthday, and a room with nothing left but ash

The narrator is the book's "I," surname Chen—Dr. Chen for most of the novel. It opens on his fourteenth birthday. His father was an amateur watercolourist: a man who gave every hour after work to something entirely useless. That evening the father said a sentence to him that is the first component of the whole machine:

"The key to a wonderful life is being fascinated by something."— Dr. Chen's father, opening pages seed ①

Minutes later the ball lightning came in. It floated past the dinner table and quietly came apart. When he could see again, the chairs, the walls, essentially everything in the room was intact, and his parents were ash.seed ② It was not an explosion and it was not a fire. It was an extraordinarily fastidious kind of destruction: it consumed what it had selected and touched nothing else.

In a single evening a fourteen-year-old received a blessing and lost his entire family. He obeyed the blessing. He became fascinated by something. He read atmospheric physics at university and staked his life on a phenomenon whose very existence was still disputed.

Act two · Chasing something that refuses to appear

At university he meets his supervisor, Zhang Bin—the novel's first alarm bell. Zhang Bin is a silent old professor who has spent a lifetime computing mathematical models of ball lightning. Note the weight of that word: lifetime. Decades, a room full of paper, nothing solved. His wife, Zheng Min, worked on the same problem and was struck by ball lightning while trying to take measurements. She was gone.seed ③

What Zhang Bin tells his student is: give it up. This is not despondency, it is data—the road already has his own lifetime and his wife's life lying on it. An old man advising a boy not to do the thing he himself did for fifty years: that is the first time the novel lays the bill for obsession on the table. Chen does not listen.

In the summer of 2006, on Mount Tai, he meets Lin Yun. She is then a doctoral student at the National University of Defense Technology, a major, working on electronic warfare and "new concept weapons"—the term of art for the generation of weapons that steps outside guns and shells. The two of them click instantly. But they are not fascinated by the same thing. He wants the answer; she wants the weapon. That fault line is there from the first day, papered over for twenty years by shared excitement.

Lin Yun's back-story is the hardest passage in the book. When she was six, her mother—a signals company commander—died in the Sino-Vietnamese border war: the enemy released swarms of wasps, and her mother died slowly, her body eaten away. Many years later Lin Yun learned from a Russian scientist that this had not been bad luck. It was a designed weapon, a product of new-concept weapons research.seed ④

That is the whole of Lin Yun's motive, and it runs backwards: she did not fall in love with weapons; weapons killed her mother. A person can grow pacifism out of that wound. What grew in Lin Yun was the other thing—if weapons decide who lives, then one must stand on the side that builds them.

The two of them travel to Russia. There they meet the old scientist Gemov (Ge Mofu) and see what is left of the Soviet Base 3141: founded in 1960, disbanded in 1990; thirty years of firing enormous lightning simulators into the air; twenty-seven instances of ball lightning produced, three men dead, and no pattern discovered at all. Nobody could say how they had made them, and nobody could repeat it. What the base left behind is scrap metal and a conclusion: this thing does not obey "add more energy and run the experiment again," the most reliable method science has.

Back from Siberia, the Chinese effort runs into the same wall. It cannot be made.

Act three · If you can't make it, go find it

The turn is a reversal of direction: if manufacture has failed, then go out into nature and capture one. They take detectors, superconducting batteries and magnetic-field rigs and chase real thunderstorms.

And they catch something—a bubble. It is transparent, empty inside, like a small patch of air that has been gently twisted. It does not glow and it burns nothing, but it is there: it can be enclosed, carried, moved.

The physicist Ding Yi arrives at this point and supplies the novel's central explanation: ball lightning is a macro-electron—an electron the size of a basketball. The bubble is that electron unexcited. A lightning strike lifts it from a low energy level to a high one, whereupon it glows, radiates, and becomes the sphere people see; once the energy is spent it drops back down and is an empty bubble again.

The inference rolls onward: if there are macro-electrons, there must be macro-nuclei, and therefore macro-atoms. They do find a macro-nucleus—a dancing "string" with no substance, visible only through the way it refracts light, separated from its electron by some five hundred kilometres.

Which establishes the loveliest idea in the book: the bubbles are everywhere. We have always lived among enormous invisible atoms; they pass through our bodies and we feel nothing. This is Liu Cixin's finest move, at full power—he does not hand you a new world, he tells you the old world was always like this and you simply were not entitled to know.

Act four · "Burned" is the wrong word

Next comes selectivity. A given ball lightning burns exactly one class of thing: this one only wood, that one only iron, another only human beings. Each is tuned—one macro-electron per class of target, a key that opens one kind of lock. Which explains the room on his fourteenth birthday: luck did not spare the furniture; the sphere had never had any intention of touching it.payoff ② ↑ Translating that opening catastrophe into a cold physical rule takes two hundred pages—and for those two hundred pages the heap of ash hangs in mid-air, impossible for anyone to put down.

Then Ding Yi's blade, the real hinge of the novel: what ball lightning "burns" does not cease to exist. It enters a quantum state—a superposition of existing and being destroyed, the cat that is both dead and alive. They become "quantum ghosts": position describable only as probability, surfacing somewhere for a moment and gone again.

The rule comes with a rider, to be repaid later: a superposition needs to be observed before it collapses into one definite outcome.seed ⑤ With no observer, a thing can go on being both.

For Dr. Chen the conclusion means the sentence it took him half a lifetime to dare think: his parents are not entirely dead. What he has been chasing all his life was never the murder weapon. It was two people's whereabouts.

Meanwhile the research has been folded into the new-concept weapons programme. The first combat use arrives abruptly: anti-technology extremists seize a nuclear power station. A conventional assault means blowing up a nuclear plant, so nobody dares move. The ball lightning weapon goes in, and the result is close to perfect: every terrorist eliminated, not one pipe in the facility damaged. Then the bill arrives—the twenty-seven underage hostages inside are converted, simultaneously, into quantum states. They are not dead. They are not alive. They are twenty-seven probability distributions that occasionally flicker into view.

This is the novel's moral watershed: before it, weaponization was a matter of position; after it, everyone knows how the ledger works—and the programme continues on schedule.

There is a quieter echo as well. Visiting Zhang Bin's grave, Ding Yi and Lin Yun find writing on the headstone. It was cut there by Zheng Min—the wife "burned" during an observation, now existing as a quantum state.payoff ③ ↑ Zhang Bin spent a lifetime calculating what killed her; the answer is that she was never killed. And the reply arrives too late: the addressee is under the stone. Liu Cixin has written many enormous set-pieces, but his sharpest single stroke is letting a man receive a message on his own gravestone.

Act five · A war, and one woman observing herself

War breaks out between China and the United States. The novel enters its most contested and fastest section: ball lightning weapons deployed as regular units. Because of selectivity, they can be tuned to burn only chips—no bodies, no buildings, just every electronic device across an entire area turned into scrap in the same instant. Lin Yun argues for pushing it all the way, including against carrier battle groups.

But she has crossed a line. What she wants is no longer victory; it is the final weapon: macro-fusion. If macro-nuclei exist, then the fusion of macro-nuclei must exist—and nobody knows its yield, its limits, or whether it stops. Ding Yi cannot calculate the outcome. The generals work out what kind of person she is and remove her from macro-atom research.

Her answer is insubordination. On a pretext she occupies the macro-fusion test site and, before the missiles arrive, ignites macro-nuclear fusion.payoff ④ ↑ The girl whose mother was taken at six by a new-concept weapon has become the most formidable author in that lineage—the thing she spent a life opposing is the thing she personally completed. Liu Cixin does not let her fall; he lets her follow through. She is the same person from first page to last; that person simply walked all the way to the end of the road.

The consequence is the largest detonation in the book and its form is terrifyingly quiet: across a vast area—by the novel's reckoning, one third of China's chips—electronics turn to quantum state in a single instant. The war cannot continue. The United States signs a ceasefire quickly: less a strike than a demonstration, whose content is "we have this now." Lin Yun ends a war by disobeying an order, and pays with herself: she too becomes a quantum state in the fusion.

What follows is the strangest scene in the novel. A person in quantum state cannot remain stable; collapse requires an observer. Lin Yun does something nobody else manages—she observes herself, holding herself uncollapsed by self-observation.payoff ⑤ ↑ The rule that sounded in act four like a piece of setting explanation becomes here the shape of a character's will: she buys herself a last stretch of time, and uses it to lay out, to her father General Lin Feng and to Ding Yi, the inner life she had never shown anyone. Only when she has finished does she let herself collapse. A woman who let people see nothing but weapons gives, at the very end, one complete view.

Later she appears in a photograph of Ding Yi's—together with the twenty-seven children from the power station. Presumably they are living together in some quantum form of this world.

The ending is very light. Dr. Chen marries Dai Lin, a university classmate, and life goes on. In his room there is always an empty vase—it once held a blue rose, a quantum rose, left there by Lin Yun.payoff ① ↑ The father's sentence about being fascinated by something is now fully repaid: it is the recipe for every disaster in the book, and it is also the only possible source of that flower. Zhang Bin paid a lifetime, Zheng Min paid her life, Lin Yun paid herself and a war, Dr. Chen paid his youth and any chance of an ordinary life. Blessing or curse—Liu Cixin does not answer. He simply sets the four invoices side by side.

And there is a coda whose ambition many readers only register on the last page. If a superposition requires an observer to collapse, then in a place where nobody is observing, things ought to stay superposed—yet the measurements come back collapsed. Which means something else is watching. And later that higher observer stops watching the ball lightning experiments, as though it had turned its head away. The book ends there, unexplained.

Read the five acts together and the fuse is not the glowing sphere: it is a blessing. A father said a beautiful thing about life at his son's fourteenth birthday and died minutes later, which made it a will, and the son obeyed it for fifty years. Every major character is a variant of that sentence—Zhang Bin was fascinated by the model, Zheng Min by the measurement, Ding Yi by physics itself, Lin Yun by weapons. Everything that follows—the scrap metal at Base 3141, the bubbles, the twenty-seven children, the end of a war—is the price of that sentence, charged to different people.

Three slow-motion replays

1 · The birthday: horror made of order, not of wreckage

The craft in this scene is entirely in what is not destroyed. The default way to write catastrophe is to shoot the debris: fire, blast, twisted metal. Liu Cixin inverts it and shows us an undamaged room—table there, chairs there, painting on the wall, everything in its usual place. Only two people missing.

What this produces is not grief but unintelligibility. Grief can be digested; unintelligibility cannot. What the fourteen-year-old faces is not "my parents died" but "there exists something that can take my parents and touch nothing else"—and behind that there must be a rule, and rules can be found out. The engine of the whole novel is installed in this instant: he does not want revenge, he wants to understand.

Note the person, too. The first-person "I" does one thing here: record. No breakdown, no screaming. When a man narrates in a level voice an event he has never digested, readers supply the emotion themselves.

2 · Twenty-seven children: he lets you enjoy it first, then hands you the bill

This is the most finely engineered sequence in the book, and it comes in two movements.

The first movement is pure pleasure: an impossible tactical problem (hostages inside a nuclear plant; conventional means amount to detonating a dirty bomb), a perfect weapon, a clean execution. Reading it, your body is on the side of the ball lightning—which is deliberate. Liu wants you to taste "technology solves everything" first.

The second movement is the bill, and the form of the bill is where the cruelty lives: the twenty-seven children did not die. Had they died, this would be a familiar ethical story—collateral damage, solemn mourning, greater care next time. Instead they became quantum states. They are and are not; occasionally one flickers at the end of a corridor. A thing you cannot hold a funeral for is a thing you cannot close.

Note Liu's restraint: nobody delivers a moral speech, and the programme does not stop. He simply leaves the number twenty-seven sitting there and goes on writing the war. Rendering a moral catastrophe as one line in a workflow is closer to how such things actually happen than any denunciation would be.

3 · Writing on the headstone: the quietest blow in the book

An old man calculated for a lifetime in order to establish how his wife was lost. He failed, he died, he was buried. Then his student and his colleague come to sweep the grave and find writing on the stone, cut there by his wife—she was there the whole time, only never stably visible.

The force of the scene comes from the lag: not "she came back" but "she came back too late." Science fiction slides easily into a warm reunion here; Liu writes a near-miss instead. And his choice of surface is exact—a headstone, an object whose entire function is to declare a person concluded, now carrying live news from that person's beloved. Two mutually cancelling messages on one slab of rock.

One more layer: the discovery belongs to Ding Yi and Lin Yun, not to the narrator. The protagonist is absent—because the real protagonist of the scene is the person who has been absent all along.

Taking the idea seriously: what in this is true

This is a novel of ideas, so the ideas have to be pushed as real things. Honestly, they come in three layers.

Layer one: true—ball lightning itself

Ball lightning is a two-hundred-year-old open case in meteorology. Eyewitness reports agree to an uncanny degree: thunderstorm conditions, roughly the size of a basketball, lasting seconds to tens of seconds, capable of passing through a window, sometimes scorching particular objects. Because it appears at random and lasts so briefly, you essentially cannot have instruments waiting for it, and there is still no settled account of its formation; laboratories have produced luminous spheres of a broadly similar kind, and one of the leading explanatory routes treats it as a kind of electromagnetic soliton—a self-sustaining packet of electromagnetic energy. In other words the novel's starting line is real: there is a thing out there that humans have watched for two centuries and still cannot describe.

Layer two: invented, but beautifully—macro-electrons and macro-atoms

"An electron the size of a basketball" is a physically meaningless sentence: in the Standard Model the electron is a point particle with no extent, so there is no scaled-up version of it. Macro-electrons, the dancing string of a macro-nucleus, a nucleus five hundred kilometres from its electron, macro-fusion—all of it is the novel's invention, not the conclusion of any branch of physics.

As a piece of narrative machinery, though, it is close to perfect, because it solves three storytelling problems at once:

Layer three: the boldest and least defensible link—macroscopic quantum states

Bluntly: treating Schrödinger's cat as an actual cat is this book's furthest departure from physics. "Observation collapses the wave function" is a claim the Copenhagen interpretation makes about microscopic systems. Modern physics also has decoherence: the larger an object and the more it interacts with its environment, the faster its quantum coherence disappears—far too fast for a macroscopic object ever to hold a superposition. A cat, a person, twenty-seven children cannot physically be "both existing and destroyed." Schrödinger proposed the cat in the first place precisely to mock the absurdity of that inference.

Liu Cixin knows this. What he wants is not correctness but a mechanism that keeps death open. With it, the book can be a hard-SF novel and a novel about loss at the same time: parents, a wife, twenty-seven children, Lin Yun—everyone taken is still drifting in probability, and nobody can properly say goodbye. This is not physics. It is a metaphor for mourning, written in the shape of a formula.

The coda's idea: the super-observer

The final inference is the most philosophical and the chain is short and frightening. If superpositions collapse only when observed, and results come back collapsed even where nobody is observing, then there is an observer outside us. It has been watching this universe. And later it takes its attention off the ball lightning experiments.

The point is that this conclusion reads equally well as theology and as a horror story. Liu picks neither. He finishes the reasoning and puts down the pen—his standard practice: push a line of logic to the place you would rather not follow, then stop there.

What it forces you to think about

Question 1
Does a weapon with zero collateral damage make war more humane, or simply make firing easier?

Take the affirmative side at full strength first. The plan executed at the power station would score full marks in any military ethics seminar: a conventional assault risks contaminating a region; the ball lightning weapon removed the gunmen precisely and left the facility without a scratch. Refusing a more precise instrument means choosing for more innocent people to die—that is not moral fastidiousness, it is moral negligence. The military-technical history of the twentieth century can be read as a history of improving precision, and the body counts really did fall.

Now the other side, argued more coldly than its own advocates usually manage. The cleaner a weapon, the lower the threshold for using it; the lower the threshold, the more often it is used. The real consequence of that night is not the twenty-seven children—it is the proof that the thing works. From then on the weapon moves from contested laboratory object to standard-issue equipment. Had the operation been dirtier, had its costs been visible, every subsequent decision would have been slower. Precision does not change the total quantity of war; it changes the psychological cost of war.

Bring it home: every "cleaner method of execution" has the same structure. An automated termination email is far cleaner than a conversation, so terminations increase; an algorithmic loan rejection is far cleaner than a refusal across a counter, so refusals increase. Technology rarely changes what we are able to do. Mostly it changes what we are willing to do.

Question 2
Should a society employ someone who has converted trauma into ability—when the obsession is precisely what makes her useful?

Speak first for the generals who removed Lin Yun, at full strength. Her judgement and her motive run along the same nerve. What she wants has never been national security; it is a private vow made by a six-year-old. The two aims happened to point the same way for years, but at the first fork she takes her own—as her seizure of the test site proves exactly. An organization may hire geniuses; it may not hand an irreversible button to someone whose motive it does not control. That is not cruelty, it is the minimum of risk management.

Now speak for Lin Yun, equally hard. Every life-saving thing in the hands of the people who removed her was built by her obsession. Normal people do not stake an entire career on a phenomenon unsolved for two hundred years; normal people turn around at the scrap heap of Base 3141. She could keep walking precisely because she was not normal. The standard organizational manoeuvre is to indulge the obsessive while a breakthrough is needed and purge the obsessive once it lands—enjoy the returns of unreason first, then dispose of the person in the name of reason. Morally this looks appalling; managerially it is close to unavoidable.

The version near you: the most committed person on the team is usually the hardest to work with. You want the output and you wish they were a different sort of person—but that sort of person and that output are probably two faces of one thing.

Question 3
Is "being fascinated by something" a blessing or a curse?

The book tests the sentence on four people and deliberately withholds a verdict.

For the blessing: without that kind of obsession a life really is thinner. Zhang Bin computed models for fifty years and produced nothing—but ask whether he would trade for a "normal" fifty years and the answer is almost certainly no. Whether a thing is worth doing and whether it got done were always two separate questions.

The curse reads at least as well, and the evidence is harder: Zheng Min died, Zhang Bin's life came out blank, Lin Yun burned herself into probability. Worse, fascination does not choose its object. The same sentence grows into "understand a natural phenomenon" and into "build the most vicious weapon available." The father's line contains no qualifier about what to be fascinated by, and every tragedy in the novel comes out of that blank. What sets a person alight is largely luck, and the consequences are paid over a lifetime.

In daily terms this is the entire risk of turning a passion into a career. It can give your life a real spine, or it can leave you at forty discovering that the thing you gave everything to never intended to pay you back—and that you can no longer do anything else.

Question 4
Is "not dead" a consolation, or a crueller kind of suspension?

The quantum state is the tenderest thing this book invents and also the harshest.

The tender side is obvious. Farewell is the hardest human operation, and the novel offers an exit from it. The parents are still there, the wife is still there, the children are still there, Lin Yun is still there—they simply cannot be stably seen. For any reader who has lost someone, the pull of this premise is close to unfair.

Now the harsh side. What cannot be declared over can never be processed. How are the parents of those twenty-seven children supposed to live? No funeral, no body, no day on which acceptance can begin—because a flicker is always possible. That is not hope; it is mourning placed permanently on hold. Zhang Bin is the specimen: he waited a lifetime, and the answer was cut into his stone after his death. The quantum state gives everyone a "maybe" and then makes them carry the maybe to the end of their days.

The question is arriving in other forms. Is a relative in a persistent vegetative state still here? Is a model trained on someone's messages, speaking in a dead person's register, a keepsake, a hallucination, or a sense in which they are "still there"? Technology is increasingly good at preventing anything from being finally declared over, and human beings need things to be over in order to continue. This novel finished setting that problem in 2005.

The recurring theme: what Liu Cixin keeps writing

Line his work up and the branch Ball Lightning belongs to is unmistakable: people wholly occupied by one thing, and what the occupation costs.

The closest sibling is his story in which a group of physicists queue at an altar of truth to trade their lives for the universe's final answer: a life for a fact is the same species of bargain as Zhang Bin's lifetime for a model. "The Village Teacher" raises knowledge itself to something worth dying for. And "With Her Eyes," about a girl trapped at the centre of the earth, is Liu's other half: iron-cold at the largest scale, and, when he is tender, always landing on something very small—a blade of grass, a sunset, and here a blue rose in a vase that never held another flower.

The second line is technology and war, worked through in stories such as "Full-Spectrum Barrage Jamming": when a technology can decide a nation's survival, where do individual lives and moral ledgers get placed? His protagonists never choose between good and evil. They choose between two prices.

There is also a bridge: Ding Yi walks out of this book into The Three-Body Problem, where he dies beneath the droplet, and the trilogy mentions Lin Yun. The macro-atom apparatus and the Three-Body universe share a set of teeth—in Liu Cixin's world, physics is never scenery; it is something that kills people directly.

Criticism and controversy

Without flattery, this novel's problems are conspicuous, and most of the criticism is fair:

Ten sentences to take away

1. This is not a story about ball lightning. It is a story about being fascinated by something—the blessing is the fuse.

2. The horror of the opening is not that the room was destroyed but that the room was untouched, and two people were ash.

3. What cannot be manufactured can only be found: wrong direction, and no amount of energy helps.
