"How do I get my child to want to learn?" is nearly every parent's ultimate puzzle. But intrinsic drive isn't something you can stuff in — it's more like a plant: you can't pull it taller, only loosen the soil, water it, and stop blocking the light. This chapter is about where motivation comes from, and how we so often snuff it out without meaning to.
Intrinsic drive isn't something you're born with or without — it's the result of three psychological needs being met. When a child feels "I get a say in this (autonomy), I can handle it (competence), someone's in it with me (relatedness)," motivation arises on its own. School aversion is usually one of these three going long unmet.
Edward Deci and Richard Ryan's Self-Determination Theory is one of the sturdiest motivation theories of the past half-century. Hundreds of studies show: once the three basic needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness are met, people invest, persist, and thrive on their own; suppress them, and motivation withers or turns to resistance. It explains a familiar scene: the same child will grind at a game past midnight but can't sit still for homework for five minutes — not for lack of focus, but because the game precisely feeds all three (you choose, ever-rising competence, shoulder to shoulder with teammates), while homework often offers none.
Instead of "how do I make him study," ask: of these three, which is he missing right now?
Your child gets irritable and stalls the moment homework comes up.
Don't just say: "Go do it now, no play until it's done!" (steps on all three: strips autonomy, implies incompetence, turns the relationship adversarial)
Try diagnosing first: "Is it too hard and you don't know where to start (competence), or you don't want to be told what to do (autonomy), or you'd like me to sit with you a bit (relatedness)?"
Then patch the right one: too hard, break it down together; wants a say, offer "math or Chinese first, you decide"; wants company, sit nearby, each doing your own thing.
① Chalking all reluctance up to "lazy, undisciplined" and only adding pressure — which squeezes out autonomy and competence further. ② Feeding only competence (classes, drills) while ignoring autonomy; grades rise but the child feels emptier. ③ Using "it's for your own good" to hold relatedness hostage, mortgaging the relationship to schoolwork.
Rewarding a child for doing something they already love can actually weaken that love. Because the reward quietly rewrites the answer in their head: from "I do it because I enjoy it" to "I do it because there's a prize." Stop the prize, and the motivation collapses.
This is the famous overjustification effect. Lepper, Greene, and Nisbett (1973) split children who already loved drawing into three groups: one promised a "Good Player" certificate in advance for drawing, one given an unexpected award afterward, one with no reward. Weeks later during free play, the group promised a reward in advance drew noticeably less on their own — the reward turned "play" into "a job done for the prize." The mechanism: people look back at their own behavior for a reason, and once an external reason (the reward) exists, the brain no longer needs the internal one ("because I like it"), so interest gets crowded out. For a dull task with no interest to begin with, a reward can kick-start it; but for something the child already loves, a material reward trades short-term compliance for long-term passion.
Your child already loves reading, and you want to "encourage" more of it.
Don't: "10 dollars for every book you finish!" (puts a price tag on love; reading becomes earning)
Try: "I've been thinking about that ending you told me — what happened to that character after?" Meet their interest with genuine interest.
If you must use external motivation, point it at process and autonomy: "This week you pick what to read, and read as far as you like." Not pay-per-unit.
① Rewarding (money/points) things a child already loves, unwittingly turning them into "work." ② Once rewards start they're hard to stop; the appetite keeps climbing, and no prize means a strike. ③ Confusing reward with celebration — heartfelt praise that arrives unexpectedly afterward is harmless; the "deal" hung out in advance is what most harms intrinsic drive.
Getting a child to do something reluctant looks very different done controllingly (commands, threats, pressure) versus with autonomy support (limited choices, stated reasons, acknowledged feelings). The first buys going-through-the-motions and resistance; only the second lets a rule actually get internalized as the child's own.
Research repeatedly shows: the more autonomy-supportive teachers and parents are, the higher a child's intrinsic motivation, engagement, and achievement; the more controlling, the more the child leans on external pushing and collapses the moment pressure lifts. The principle is still the autonomy need: humans instinctively resist being dominated (psychology calls it reactance) — the harder you push, the harder they push back. Autonomy support isn't permissiveness — the limits remain, but you hand back part of the "how" decision and let the child understand the reason behind the rule, not "because I said so." With a sense of participation, the rule shifts from "yours" to "ours."
It's time for piano practice, and the face says no.
Controlling: "Go practice right now! No TV until you do!" (pure pressure, reactance maxed)
Autonomy-supportive: First catch the feeling: "I know you're tired today and don't feel like it."
Then offer choice: "Do you want to practice 20 minutes now, or after some fruit? The easy piece first or tackle the hard bit?"
Then give the reason: "We touch it daily because fingers need to keep the memory; skip too long and last week's effort is wasted."
① Turning "choice" into fake choice: "Are you writing now, or right now?" — kids see through it and resist more. ② Giving only reasons without catching feelings; however right, it lands as a lecture. ③ Reverting to control the moment the child pushes back — autonomy support is the first thing dropped under pressure, exactly when it matters most.
"School aversion" is almost never inborn laziness — it's a signal: too hard (frustration), too easy (boredom), too much pressure (anxiety), or utterly disconnected from life (meaninglessness). Finding the reason behind the signal matters far more than forcing them back to the desk. And the key to reigniting drive is curiosity — it lives in the crack between what a child already knows and what they want to know.
Economist George Loewenstein's information-gap theory holds that curiosity isn't spontaneous — it ignites when a person realizes they "know a little, but are missing a piece"; that gap itches, and they want to scratch it. It's why suspense, puzzles, and "guess what" grip us more than being told. And school aversion is often the result of a gap being sealed shut: the content is either far beyond ability (gap too wide, despair), utterly unoriginal (no gap, boredom), or drowned out by test anxiety (no room for curiosity). So the parent's leverage isn't "reason them into loving school," but first lower the anxiety, then create small gaps: connect knowledge to what they truly care about, and let "wanting to know" grow on its own.
Your child says, "What's the point of learning this, I hate school."
Don't say: "No school and you'll starve someday!" (pressure by fear, turning aversion into opposition)
Play detective first: "Which subject, which thing bugs you most? Too hard, too boring, or is something else going on?" — break "school aversion" into a specific, solvable problem.
Then make a gap: connect to what they care about — a gamer? "Wanna guess how that damage number in the game gets calculated?" Turn math into a puzzle they want to pry open.
① Treating "aversion" as an attitude to correct rather than a signal to hear — missing the real call for help behind it. ② Comparing — "everyone else can, why can't you" — which punctures competence outright. ③ Wanting to "make them love learning" in one leap, which creates pressure; curiosity accrues one small gap at a time and can't be rushed.
