Awe isn't vague poetic feeling—it's a measurable, distinct emotion with a clear neural signature and behavioral effects. Why does that endlessly chattering "I" suddenly go quiet under a night sky, inside a swell of music, or at the sight of a stranger's kindness? The answer isn't mysticism, but a psychological resource you can deliberately draw on.

Keltner & Haidt define awe by two features: perceived vastness (something that exceeds your everyday frame of reference—physical, as in a starry sky, but also moral or intellectual) + a need for accommodation (your current mental schemas can't contain it, so you must update your understanding). So awe isn't an intensified form of "happy"—it's a distinct emotion, sitting at the border of wonder and fear.
The Mechanism
Awe activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the vagus nerve), often with goosebumps (piloerection). Behaviorally it does three things: Rudd et al. (2012) found awe expands subjective time—people feel "time is more abundant," and become more patient and more helpful; Stellar et al. Neurally, self-referential processing is handled largely by the default mode network (DMN)—the inner narrative system that keeps you thinking "how am I doing, what do others think of me" (echoing Day 24). Awe, deep meditation, and psychedelic experiences all correlate with reduced DMN activity (Carhart-Harris). When the DMN quiets, the chattering "I" exits the stage, and subjectively that's the "small self." Bai et al. (2017) replicated "awe → small self" in both US and Chinese samples—so this is not a product of Western individualism.
Applying It
SelfRumination is essentially the DMN stuck in the "I" loop. When you spiral into self-criticism, actively seeking the vast (stepping out to look at the sky, playing grand music) is a way to interrupt rumination physiologically—more effective than "just let it go."

Self-check + Common Misconception: mistaking "small self" for "belittling yourself / self-negation." Quite the opposite—people who experience the small self report stronger connection and greater wellbeing, not a sense of insignificance. They aren't mysticism, but researchable psychological states with a common neural signature.
The Mechanism
Yaden locates all STEs along two dimensions: an annihilational axis (how much the sense of self weakens) and a relational axis (how much the felt oneness with the outside world increases). Flow sits at the "low-annihilation" end; mystical union at the "high" end. This coordinate system turns a messy pile of "spiritual vocabulary" into a comparable, measurable continuum.

Historical note: "peak experience" is a concept from Abraham Maslow's 1960s humanistic psychology, based partly on case studies and introspection. But it has not been overturned—rather, Yaden et al. reactivated it with more rigorous methods as measurable STE research: "old concept, new evidence," fundamentally different from the falsified structural theory of Freud.
Applying It
SelfYou need not chase rare mystical experiences. The "mild end" of the spectrum—a deep flow state, a piece of music, a fully absorbed hug—brings the same transcendent benefits, and is available daily.
ParentingDon't treat a child's "spacing out" as all distraction. Absorbed engagement (building blocks and losing track of time) is a healthy seed of self-transcendence, worth protecting.
RelationshipDeeply synced togetherness, facing life-and-death moments together—these are STEs within a relationship, often the "stickiest" anchors in relational memory.
TeamCollective flow (a team's "self-forgetting" state in sport or a crunch project) is a team STE—rare, but it strongly reinforces identity.
Self-check + Common Misconception: romanticizing STEs as "attainable only through psychedelics or extreme practice," or treating them as an exit from reality. Research stresses that their value lies in the aftermath—whether they make you more connected, kinder, more meaning-rich when you return to life. Reflect: are flow (Day 18) and mystical experience a difference of degree or of kind? If it's one continuum, is everyday "deep engagement" the most underrated spiritual practice?
Nature is the most accessible, most reliable source of awe. But the key isn't "going into nature"—it's going with an awe-oriented way of attending. Sturm et al.'s (2020) "awe walk" study showed: on the same walk, older adults guided to actively notice the grand and the novel had significantly higher positive and prosocial emotions after 8 weeks—and even the "self" in their selfies got smaller and smaller.
The Mechanism
Kaplan's Attention Restoration Theory (ART) explains why nature restores the mind: cities demand "directed attention" (effortful, depleting), while nature offers "soft fascination" (effortlessly engaging, like flowing water or the play of shadows), letting directed attention rest. Awe adds another layer: it actively turns attention from the self toward the vast. Together—nature restores attention, awe resets the self. Astronauts' "overview effect" (White) is the extreme version: in the instant of seeing Earth from space, borders and conflicts dissolve into a single "fragile blue dot."
Applying It

1. Is awe's "small self" the same thing as Buddhism's "no-self"?
There's a genuine intersection, but don't equate them. Neurally, both correlate with reduced DMN activity, and subjectively both are a dissolution of self-boundaries. But Buddhism's "no-self" (anattā) is a whole philosophical and contemplative system about the nature of the self—holding that "I" is a dependently-arisen composite with no permanent essence; whereas psychology's "small self" is a single state-based, measurable emotional effect that comes and goes. The small-self effect is like a brief, physiological preview of the "no-self" insight—but equating one awe experience with awakening is mistaking the map for the territory.
2. Why can the same emotion make people more generous, and also be used to manipulate?
Because awe's core is letting the self yield to something larger—and awe itself passes no judgment on what that "larger thing" is. Pointed at nature, moral beauty, a shared mission, the yielding self buys connection and prosociality; steered toward a leader, an ideology, an inciting rally, the same "shrinking of the self" becomes a disarming of critical thinking. So healthy awe needs a question attached: is this vastness inviting me to connect, or demanding that I submit?
3. Is the digital age systematically manufacturing an "awe deficit"?
Very possibly. Awe depends on two things screens are best at destroying: sustained attention and unexpected vastness. Infinite scroll chops attention into fragments, making it hard to dwell on a scene or an idea long enough for "accommodation" to occur; the algorithm-fed "wow" is a calibrated dopamine hit, with the appearance of wonder but without the shrinking of the self. Worse, screens fill every "boring gap"—and it's precisely in those gaps that awe gets its chance to enter. The remedy is counterintuitive: not seeking more spectacular content, but deliberately leaving space, and re-practicing the habit of looking up.
4. As psychedelic research reduces "spirituality" to brain activity, is that disenchantment or deepening?
It depends on how you read "reduce." Finding that mystical experience corresponds to reduced DMN activity and specific serotonin-receptor activation doesn't explain away the experience's meaning—just as knowing love corresponds to oxytocin doesn't cheapen love. Neural correlates address "how it happens," not "what it means." The real value of this research is a bridge: it lets millennia of contemplative insight about consciousness and the self be, for the first time, empirically tested and responsibly applied. So it's more like deepening—what it dispels is superstition; what it leaves is the phenomenon itself.
