The Mechanism

George Loewenstein (1994) proposed the information-gap theory: curiosity arises from the distance between what you know and what you want to know. Too big a gap (utterly unfamiliar) → no foothold, no curiosity. Too small a gap (you basically know it all) → no distance, no curiosity either. But it cuts both ways: aimless wandering slides toward rumination and anxiety, while incubatory wandering (say, on a walk) can spark insight and creativity. The difference often lies in — whether you notice you're wandering.

Can the "information gap" frame explain all curiosity?
Gap theory explains epistemic curiosity powerfully — you notice what's missing, then want to fill it. But it explains perceptual curiosity less well (being automatically hooked by an odd sound or vivid color): that looks more like a novelty-driven orienting response, without a prior sense of "I know that I don't know." A growing view holds that "gap-filling" and "novelty-seeking" may be partly independent motivational systems. Forcing all curiosity into one frame may oversimplify.
Is boredom the same experience across cultures?
Boredom's modern sense is tightly bound to industrialization and consumer society — when stimulation becomes the norm, monotony grows unbearable. In traditions of repetitive labor more tolerant of sameness, or in meditative cultures that treat "abiding in the present" as practice, the same circumstance need not be read as painful "boredom" — it may even be a gateway to concentration. This suggests boredom has a physiological core (wanting to engage and failing), but how painful and how urgently it demands a fix is largely written in by culture.
Is the "wandering makes us unhappy" finding over-read?
Killingsworth's data are correlational, not causal. Although his time-lagged analysis argues "wandering precedes unhappiness," in real life the two likely feed each other: a low mood makes wandering more likely, and wandering deepens the low mood. And not all wandering is alike — future-directed planning and creative incubation carry very different emotional consequences from being stuck in the past. Treating "wandering" as a single variable erases its most important internal distinctions.
In the AI era, does "closing the gap in a second" weaken curiosity?
Gap theory has a hidden premise: part of curiosity's value comes from the tension of "staying in not-knowing" — it forces you to think, hypothesize, build frameworks. When any question can be instantly answered, the gap opens and shuts in a blink, and we may be training a habit of "wanting answers" without "wanting understanding." For anyone pursuing the "super-individual," the truly scarce skill may not be the speed of getting information, but the ability to hold off looking it up and think for a while first — the very soil of deep epistemic curiosity.
