Core Insight
The mind is not a blank general-purpose slate but a set of specialized mechanisms that natural selection carved over millions of years to solve the problems our ancestors faced again and again — finding food, evading predators, mating, parenting, forming alliances. To understand why a behavior exists, ask: what adaptive problem did it solve in the ancestral environment?
The Research
Leda Cosmides and John Tooby proposed the "modularity of mind": the brain is more like a Swiss Army knife than a single CPU — many specialized tools evolved for specific problems (face recognition, kin detection, cheater detection...). The classic evidence is the Wason selection task — nearly everyone fails the abstract-logic version, but accuracy jumps when it's framed as "who broke the rule, who's the cheater." We carry a dedicated "social contract" reasoning module, not a general logic engine.
The Mechanism
This explains why humans are full of "content-specific" biases: the same logic problem is solved when dressed as a social question and failed when dressed in abstract symbols. Emotions work the same way — fear, disgust, jealousy, shame aren't "irrational"; each is an ancient program that once solved some survival or reproductive problem. It may no longer apply today, but it was once "useful."

SelfWhen a strong urge grips you (sugar, status, approval), first ask: "What problem did this solve for a hunter-gatherer?" Reframing an urge from "my flaw" to "an outdated adaptation" lowers shame and, paradoxically, gives you more control.
ParentingA child's fear of the dark, of strangers, of new faces isn't "timidity" — it's evolution-preserved threat detection. See its function and you won't mistake it for a defect to correct.
TeamPeople are hypersensitive to being cheated or treated unfairly (the cheater-detection module). One unfair allocation does damage far beyond the material loss it represents.

Reflection: write down the three urges you find hardest to resist, and for each, one line on "where this might have been useful in the Stone Age."
Common pitfall: "If evolution explains it, it's justified / unchangeable." Explaining an origin ≠ justifying it — that's the naturalistic fallacy ("is" doesn't imply "ought"). The other big trap is spinning a conveniently plausible story for every behavior (a just-so story) — the field's sharpest criticism, discussed at the end.

Core Insight
Genes evolve far slower than culture and technology. We carry a brain and body optimized for hunter-gatherer life into a world of food surplus, sitting, screens, and oceans of strangers. Much modern suffering — obesity, addiction, chronic anxiety — is essentially a once well-adapted mechanism placed into an environment it was never designed for.
The Mechanism
Craving sugar and fat was lifesaving when calories were scarce; in the convenience-store era it becomes chronic disease. Sensitivity to social evaluation was a matter of life and death in a band of dozens (exile ≈ death); on social media it becomes an endless anxiety source — the brain treats a few hundred likes and downvotes as "the whole tribe's verdict on me." The reward system is also hijacked by super-normal stimuli (processed food, infinite scroll) — more concentrated and faster than anything in nature.

Common pitfall: imagining the ancestral environment as a single "Eden." Real hunter-gatherer life was varied and harsh, and not everything modern is bad — literacy, vaccines, and anesthesia are also "mismatches," yet bring enormous benefit. Don't romanticize the Stone Age.

Core Insight
David Buss's study of 37 cultures and tens of thousands of people found some cross-cultural regularities in mate preferences, plus some average sex differences tied to "parental investment." But these are statistical averages, strongly moderated by culture, and have powerful alternative explanations. This is evolutionary psychology's most insightful — and most easily distorted — territory.
The Mechanism
Trivers's parental investment theory: the sex that invests more (usually females in mammals, given the cost of pregnancy and nursing) is choosier in mating, while the lower-investing sex competes more intensely — from which some average tendencies follow. But Eagly & Wood's social role theory offers a strong rebuttal: many so-called "evolved sex differences" shrink in more egalitarian societies — meaning they arise largely from social structure and division of labor, not a fixed genetic program. The more credible truth is an interaction of "evolved tendency × cultural environment."

RelationshipsUnderstanding that attraction has an ancient side (like the pull of novelty) helps you recognize an urge — but never endorses behavior that harms a relationship. The real predictors of long-term satisfaction (emotional stability, respect, responsiveness — see Day 11 Gottman) far outweigh any "mate value" narrative.
ParentingBeware labeling children with "boys are naturally / girls are naturally." Differences are heavily overlapping averages and highly malleable; stereotype threat (see Day 47) makes the prophecy self-fulfilling.

Common pitfalls (a disaster zone here): (1) treating a group average as a prediction or prescription for an individual; (2) the naturalistic fallacy — "evolution made it so" ≠ "it ought to be so"; (3) ignoring the huge distribution overlap and cultural moderation. Any use of evolutionary psychology to argue "how the sexes should be" has crossed past what the science can support.

Kin Selection: Why Kindness Spills Beyond BloodKin Selection & the Puzzle of Altruism

Core Insight
Natural selection favors the "selfish" — so why did altruism evolve? William Hamilton's answer: a gene can "copy itself" by helping relatives who carry the same gene. When you sacrifice for kin, in a sense the gene is looking out for itself. This solves the first layer of the altruism puzzle — but human kindness spills far beyond blood.
The Mechanism
Hamilton's rule: altruism is favored by selection when rB > C (r = relatedness, B = benefit to the recipient, C = cost to the helper). This explains why we give more readily the closer the relative — "blood is thicker than water" has its math. Trivers's reciprocal altruism adds a second layer: in groups where members meet repeatedly and remember each other, "I help you, you repay me" can also evolve — which requires memory, reputation, and cheater detection (back to Concept 1).

1. How does evolutionary psychology escape the charge of "just-so stories"?
This is the field's most damaging criticism: any behavior can be "reverse-engineered" into a plausible-sounding adaptive story that's hard to falsify. Serious evolutionary psychology answers with testable predictions — first deriving from theory "what we should observe" (a preference should be cross-culturally stable, should vary with a specific ecology), then testing or refuting it against data, rather than fitting a story to a behavior after the fact. To judge whether an evolutionary explanation is credible, ask whether it made an advance, risky prediction.
2. Is culture only a source of "mismatch," or does it reshape evolution in return?
Growing evidence points to gene-culture coevolution: culture doesn't merely clash with an ancient brain; it rewrites genes. The classic case is lactose tolerance — after herding cultures arose, the gene for digesting milk into adulthood spread rapidly within a few thousand years. Joseph Henrich argues that cumulative culture shaped the uniquely human mind. This means the "Stone Age mind" metaphor needs discounting: evolution is still running, and culture accelerates it. The mind is both ancient and continuously carved by how we live right now.
3. If urges are ancient programs, what is the "I" that "chooses to change the environment"?
Evolutionary psychology explains the origin of drives but doesn't cancel our capacity to choose among them — it's precisely this metacognitive layer, "able to notice an urge and choose a different environment," that lets humans "rebel against the selfish replicators" (Dawkins). This echoes Day 24 Consciousness and the IFS "Self" of Day 5: perhaps the "self" isn't a module but a scheduling and narrative layer above the modules — produced by evolution, yet able to turn back and rearrange the programs evolution left behind.
4. Are the evolutionary view and the Buddhist "suffering" two languages for one thing?
There's a genuine resonance, but don't force it. Buddhism says all beings suffer, rooted in "greed, hatred, delusion"; the evolutionary view says the brain never optimizes for happiness, only for reproduction — it hands you endless craving, over-vigilance toward threat, and fixation on comparison because these once raised reproductive success. Both point to: dissatisfaction is a design feature, not a malfunction. They diverge on the way out: Buddhism seeks liberation and transformation; evolutionary science only describes mechanisms and offers no meaning. Placing them side by side may yield a clear-eyed compassion — understanding where a drive comes from, and choosing not to be defined by it.
