The Mechanism
The leading model is the pacemaker-accumulator (Warren Meck and others): the brain has an internal rhythm generator, and dopamine modulates its speed. In the moment, time-sense is set by attention: the more you watch the clock, the slower it feels (waiting for water to boil); the more absorbed you are, the faster (flow). In memory, duration is set by memory density: novel experiences leave more "memory anchors," so they look long in hindsight — which is why childhood summers felt endless while an adult year goes by in a blur (repetition, sparse anchors).

The same reward is worth less to you the further off it is. That's partly rational (the future is uncertain), but human discounting is hyperbolic, not exponential — meaning we're wildly impatient about near-term delays and show preference reversal: today you sensibly plan not to stay up late next week, but when the moment comes, the short video in front of you wins again.

Hyperbolic discounting (George Ainslie) plus present bias (economist David Laibson) explain this "saint when planning, spendthrift when executing" split. Neurally, McClure et al. Questions to Sit With
If subjective time is set by "novelty," are "making a life feel long" and "living in calm stability" inherently in conflict?
Not necessarily, but distinguish two kinds of "long." The "feels long" from memory density runs on novelty; the "fullness" of deep presence (flow, mindfulness) runs on total absorption, not constant novelty-seeking. The ideal may be "structurally stable, experientially vivid": a settled framework with deliberate windows of novelty and focus. Endless novelty exhausts; pure repetition gets compressed in memory. The balance point is personal.
Is hyperbolic discounting a "flaw," or a strategy that was evolutionarily selected in uncertain environments?
Most likely the latter, magnified by the modern world into the former. In ancestral settings where food spoiled and the future was risky, "take it now" was rational. The problem is that modern society rewards long-term planning (compounding, health, career capital), while our discounting curve is still tuned to the old environment. So the way out isn't to condemn instinct but to use institutions and situation design (commitment devices, automation) to supply the "foresight" the brain never evolved.
Is the "present" of mindfulness the same as the "present-hedonistic" orientation in time-perspective theory?
No — they're easily confused. Mindful "presence" is aware, non-judgmental being-here that can coexist with long-range planning; "present-hedonistic" orientation impulsively chases immediate pleasure and ignores consequences. The former is a capacity, the latter an imbalance. Meditative presence in fact often accompanies stronger self-regulation and a more balanced time perspective — so don't use "live in the present" to endorse overspending behavior.
If AI can take over much of our long-term planning and reminders, will the human "future orientation" atrophy or be liberated?
Both are possible at once. On one hand, outsourcing may let inner foresight "waste away from disuse," the way GPS weakens our sense of direction. On the other, if AI absorbs the tedious tracking and execution, it may free human attention for what machines can't do — conferring meaning, calibrating values, deciding "is it worth waiting for." The key is the division of labor: let AI handle "delay and tracking," let humans handle "value and meaning," and future orientation may be refined rather than eroded.
