// 01

EN Imagine moving into a city of several million where your neighbours, colleagues and everyone you meet know nothing about your means. In a village this is no problem — everyone knows what your family owns. Scale breaks the channel, and that break is where Thorstein Veblen's The Theory of the Leisure Class (1899) begins. What he saw first was not consumption but leisure: elites proving they need not work, through nails grown too long for labour, clothing too tight to bend in, and manners elaborate enough to require training — conspicuous leisure. Once the audience became strangers in a city, leisure could no longer be seen from the street, and the weight shifted to conspicuous consumption: money spent where it shows. He also recorded a stranger arrangement, the head of a household too busy earning to display, with wife and servants spending on his behalf. The decisive step is not the psychology of vanity but a colder condition: a signal is credible only if it is too expensive for others to imitate. Waste is not a side effect; the waste is the message. Evidence: Veblen offered theorised observation of the Gilded Age, not systematic data. Later tests come in two kinds. Heffetz (2011) first measured the visibility of each expenditure category by survey — how quickly others would notice you spending there — then compared income elasticities: more visible categories rise faster with income, and visibility explains roughly a third of the variation across categories. Correlational, but clear in direction. The harder evidence is a field experiment published in 2018 with an Indonesian bank: offered a platinum card and a card with identical benefits but no visible status marking, the same high-income customers chose platinum substantially more often, and transaction records show platinum used more in social settings. A second experiment documented positional externalities — when peers upgrade, everyone else's threshold rises. Finally, Charles, Hurst and Roussanov (2009) found in U.S. expenditure data that households of equal income differ by ethnic group in the share spent on visible goods — clothing, jewellery, cars. Rather than attributing this to group preferences, they modelled reference groups and derived a testable prediction: visible consumption should fall as the mean income of one's reference group rises. It does; and once reference-group income is included, most of the between-group difference disappears. The shift worth keeping is from who cares more about appearances to whom you are comparing yourself with. Evidence strength: observational data plus a model, not an experiment, and how reference groups should be drawn remains contested.

EN Two bags of salt on a shelf, near-identical ingredient lists, one three times the price: you know the difference is not saltiness. Or: you often cannot say what makes one garment better, yet you can see at a glance that it is not the same kind of thing as the one beside it. What you read is the difference, not the object. Jean Baudrillard pushed this to its limit in The System of Objects (1968) and The Consumer Society (1970). Besides being useful and being exchangeable, a commodity has a third layer — sign value: it occupies a position within a whole system of differences among objects, and what the buyer buys is the position. The consequence is larger than it sounds: needs saturate, positions do not. You stop eating when full, but being slightly better off than those around you has no ceiling, because the yardstick is other people. Consumption may fail to stop not because people are greedy but because what it chases has no endpoint by definition. Anthropology supplied a cooler version. Mary Douglas and the economist Baron Isherwood argued in The World of Goods (1979) that commodities are first of all instruments for making classifications visible: whom you invite to dinner, what you give, what stands in your house, all maintain a scheme of who counts as the same kind of person. Consumption is therefore closer to an information system than to extravagance — the same sorting and ordering discussed in the piece on purity and danger, on a different stage. The sharpest blow to the whole theory comes from fieldwork. In the mid-1990s Daniel Miller spent a year doing an ethnography of shopping on one street in north London: following people to the supermarket, reading receipts, listening to them weigh things up at the shelf. Most shopping, he concluded, is neither self-expression nor pleasure but buying for others — partners, children, elderly relatives — with thrift itself serving as proof of care. He read the weekly shop as something close to a rite of sacrifice. This is a hard correction to consumption-as-status-competition: theory too easily reads every purchase as a status move, while the most common kind of purchase is not in the game at all. Evidence strength: Baudrillard is theory without systematic data; Douglas offers a framework; Miller is a single-site ethnography of one street over one year. What holds here is the shape of the mechanism, not any number.

EN You have met this person: what they say about their children's weekly schedule, their own mileage and sleep, what they finished reading last month, carries far more information than a watch would — and not one price is mentioned. The logic is simple. Any marker that can be imitated eventually depreciates, so distinction does not disappear; it moves, to whichever dimension is hardest to fake at the time. A string of not-quite-consistent studies tracks this. Peterson and Kern (1996) is the famous one: using two comparable national surveys from 1982 and 1992, they found that high-status taste was no longer opera-only snobbery but markedly omnivorous, and becoming more so across the decade. Snobbish exclusion gave way to appreciating everything, and the coordinate shifted from what you listen to toward how much range you cover and how well you talk about it. Bryson (1996) must be read alongside it. Looking instead at dislikes in a 1993 national survey, she found omnivorousness has edges: the more educated reject fewer genres, yet still concentrate their rejection on those whose audiences have the least education. Tolerance is selective, so omnivorousness is not the end of distinction but a change in its shape. Elizabeth Currid-Halkett's The Sum of Small Things (2017) follows another line, using the U.S. Consumer Expenditure Survey: among high-income households, expenditure shares are shifting from visible goods toward education, childcare, health and domestic help — things that cannot be displayed — which she calls inconspicuous consumption; one figure she cites is a near-tripling of education spending by the top one per cent between 1996 and 2014. Such spending has a property others lack: it is consumption and investment at once, converting directly into the next generation's position — the channel discussed in the piece on education and reproduction. The limits deserve full statement. These are descriptive expenditure data and surveys, not causal identification, and nearly all of it is American. Michèle Lamont interviewed 160 male professionals in four French and American cities for her 1992 study and found that even the materials of boundary-drawing differ: her American respondents leaned on economic success and moral character, her French ones on cultural refinement. The French version of cultural capital discussed in the piece on Bourdieu does not transfer unaltered. A non-probability sample, three decades old, men only: evidence of uneven distribution, not of proportions. One methodological note: this topic attracts many social-psychology priming experiments in which people are shown a luxury brand and then asked to judge someone. Priming effects of that kind have fared badly in large replication efforts over the past decade, so they should not be treated as hard evidence; this section rests on surveys and expenditure data. What travels is that the vehicle changes while the mechanism does not: as long as position is relative, markers keep migrating toward whatever dimension is hardest to fake. That is a description of conditions, and it implies nothing about how anyone ought to spend.
