EN In the mid-1990s the American sociologist Annette Lareau and her assistants followed twelve families intensively — drawn from a larger interview sample of 88 — spending three weeks with each around a ten-year-old child: at dinner, at ball games, in the doctor's office. She found two logics of childrearing. Middle-class families filled the child's schedule with organised activities, reasoned with them, and encouraged them to make requests of teachers and doctors (concerted cultivation). Working-class and poor families got food, clothing and safety right and let the child grow (accomplishment of natural growth), keeping a wary distance from institutions. Neither is better as parenting; what matters is that one of them matches what schools and hospitals expect. Bourdieu and Passeron pushed the point further with 1964 statistics on French students: in 1961–62 the children of senior executives and intellectual professions had roughly 42 times the chance of entering university as the children of workers. Their real target was not the gap but how school makes it look deserved: everyone sits the same exam, so those who fail charge the result to themselves. School translates origin into talent and talent into merit — a step they call méconnaissance. Criticisms: the account is hard to falsify, and later quantitative work finds cultural-capital effects real but smaller than the theory expected and highly variable across countries. Evidence: twelve households of deep fieldwork, clear mechanism, not statistically representative.

EN Bells, raised hands, lines, deadlines, switching task on command: none of it is on the timetable, and all of it is drilled dozens of times a day. In the 1978–79 school year the education scholar Jean Anyon spent a year in each of five New Jersey elementary schools, watching what "doing schoolwork" actually meant in fifth grade. The schools were sorted by the occupational make-up of their communities into two working-class schools, a middle-class school, an affluent professional school and an executive elite school. Same arithmetic, four versions of what counts as doing it well: follow the steps; get the right answer by your own route; produce something with your own ideas in it; reason it out and take responsibility for your own output. What is taught daily is not the content but which kind of authority relation makes work count as correct — the hidden curriculum. Bowles and Gintis gave a harder version in 1976, the correspondence principle, criticised as too mechanical for treating students as blank pages. The strongest rebuttal is Paul Willis's fieldwork with twelve working-class boys in a Midlands school in the early 1970s: they saw through the promise of schooling, mocked the compliant, and that very resistance walked them into the factory. Reproduction does not require belief. One classic here needs its current status stated: Rosenthal and Jacobson's Pygmalion study (1968) reported that randomly designated "bloomers" gained on intelligence tests; three decades of replication were rocky, Raudenbush's 1984 meta-analysis pooled a small effect (d ≈ 0.14) that all but vanishes when teachers had known the students for over two weeks. Evidence: two small ethnographies giving mechanism, not distribution; a meta-analysed effect that is real but modest.

EN Degree requirements in job adverts keep climbing while the work stays the same, and this is countable. In the United States the share of people aged 25 and over holding a bachelor's degree or higher went from 4.6% in 1940 to 37.9% in 2021. In 2017 Joseph Fuller and Manjari Raman at Harvard Business School analysed 26 million job postings and found that 67% of adverts for production supervisors demanded a college degree while only 16% of people then working as production supervisors had one. Randall Collins named the process in 1979: credential inflation, driven mainly by status competition rather than by the skill demands of jobs. Economics has a sharper version — Michael Spence's 1973 signalling model, where a credential sorts people and commands a wage even if nothing is taught, so long as completing it costs less for the more able. It leaves a checkable trace: the earnings jump in the year a degree is completed exceeds the increment from an extra year of study (the sheepskin effect; Jaeger and Page in 1996 put the bachelor's jump above 20%). Pure signalling is too strong, though: natural experiments using compulsory-schooling reforms generally find real causal returns to education. Both components are present and their shares remain unsettled — the point on this page that most deserves "no verdict yet". What matters mechanically is positionality: everyone studies three years longer, the ranking does not move, the costs all rise, and nobody can withdraw unilaterally. Hence what follows expansion — when the bachelor's stops sorting, employers look at the institution, then the master's, the internship, the contest. The sorting device moves up a level and the sorting never pauses.
