EN In 1973 George Murdock and Caterina Provost coded ethnographic material from 185 societies, asking who performs each of 50 technological activities. Both ends of the distribution are firm: hunting large game, metalworking, quarrying and lumbering are done by men in nearly every recorded society; infant care is done by women in nearly every one. Twenty-four of the fifty activities fall into this near-unanimous class. But the middle band is wide — sowing, harvesting, milking, weaving, pottery, house-building — and neighbouring societies often assign them in opposite directions, with each side regarding its own arrangement as natural. Both explanations deserve their strongest statement. The bodily account, which is also the one Murdock and Provost themselves lean on: men are on average stronger throwers and lifters, women are constrained during pregnancy and lactation, so dangerous, distant and uninterruptible work drifts one way and interruptible, near-home work the other. It explains the two ends and not the middle; it cannot predict who weaves. The other side introduced a distinction still in use: sex for bodily classification, gender for the whole social arrangement of what such a person should do and be like, brought into sociology in the 1970s by Ann Oakley and others. The claim is not that bodies do not exist but that the stretch between bodily difference and specific assignment is filled in locally rather than deduced. A stronger version, Judith Butler's in 1990, holds that even sex is not a purely natural given, since the ruler we use to divide bodies carries social markings; critics say this argues away measurable physiology. This page does not adjudicate, but locates the disagreement: it is about which stretch is socially filled, not about whether bodies exist. On evidence: cross-cultural coding draws on ethnographies of uneven vintage and quality, and neighbouring societies are not independent samples (Galton's problem). Good for patterns, bad for precise proportions.

EN In 2017 Linda Babcock, Maria Recalde, Lise Vesterlund and Laurie Weingart ran a clean experiment on tasks everyone would rather someone else did: work that benefits the group but does nothing for your own evaluation — taking minutes, sitting on a committee, onboarding a newcomer. In mixed-sex groups women volunteered markedly more often than men, which invites the conclusion that women simply prefer such work. Then the groups were made single-sex and the difference vanished: men in all-male groups volunteered at about the rate women did in all-female groups. So it is not a preference. In mixed settings everyone's expectation about who will step forward has a direction, and asking for volunteers converts that expectation into the outcome. Field evidence points the same way; this is the firmest item on the page. The term: Candace West and Don Zimmerman's 1987 "doing gender". The point is not what you are but that you are always liable to be held to account against a category — their word is accountability. The cost of not complying is usually not any written penalty but re-evaluation: too pushy, not a team player, not proper. This requires nobody to actually believe anything; it only requires everyone to expect that others are watching. A real fieldwork case: Barrie Thorne spent close to a year altogether in two elementary schools in California and Michigan around 1980, watching playgrounds and classrooms. What she recorded was not that boys and girls differ but something odder — most of the time children played mixed and gender went unmentioned, yet in particular situations the boundary lit up: team contests, chasing games, cooties teasing. She called it borderwork. Often adults did the lighting: a teacher saying "boys on one side, girls on the other" hardened the line on the spot. Gender is less a constant background than a switch thrown by situations. Evidence: ethnography in two schools, clear mechanism, not statistically representative. Honesty in the other direction: stereotype threat, once an enormously popular individual-level explanation, largely fails to survive correction for publication bias in the women-and-mathematics literature, and preregistered large-sample studies do not detect it. It cannot serve as a foundation. The interactional and structural evidence above is a separate matter.

EN In 2019 Henrik Kleven, Camille Landais and Jakob Søgaard used Danish administrative data on the whole population and aligned earnings not by age or calendar year but by years relative to the birth of a first child. Before the birth the two curves run parallel. In the year of the birth one barely moves and the other drops, and ten years later it has not returned — a long-run gap of roughly 20 percent, split about evenly between participation, hours and wage rates. The more striking number is the share: the fraction of total gender earnings inequality attributable to children rose from about 40 percent in 1980 to about 80 percent in 2013. The penalty did not grow; other sources shrank and this one did not. Evidence: whole-population administrative data with an event-study design, about as strong as this field gets. Why? Several accounts, not mutually exclusive. On the employer side, Shelley Correll and colleagues in 2007 combined lab evaluation with real applications: identical materials plus a cue of motherhood produced lower competence ratings, lower recommended starting salaries and fewer callbacks, while fathers were not penalised and sometimes benefited. Yet a large Swedish field experiment (Bygren and Gähler, 2021) did not detect such hiring discrimination — so this channel is sensitive to institutional setting rather than a constant. On pay structure, Claudia Goldin's argument: in some occupations pay rises non-linearly with continuous availability, because clients cannot be handed over and cases cannot be interrupted, so whichever side absorbs the need for flexibility is systematically taxed — no prejudice required. On expectations, Kleven and colleagues found a person's child penalty correlates with their own mother's labour supply, pointing at transmitted expectation rather than a current decision. How much weight each carries is still contested. Half of care work never enters any ledger: Allison Daminger's 2019 study, 70 interviews with 35 couples, splits the cognitive side of household labour into anticipating a need before it becomes urgent, identifying options, deciding, and monitoring the result. Deciding was often shared; anticipating and monitoring fell disproportionately on one side — precisely the two least visible parts and the ones that cannot be delegated by being told what to do. Evidence: qualitative interviews with educated American couples, not generalisable. What these three sections support is limited and worth stating: they describe how the gap is produced; they cannot say whether or where to intervene, which is a value judgement outside this discipline's range. What can be said is that any intervention has to name the mechanism it targets — hiring, the pricing of hours, or who does the anticipating. Aim at the wrong one and the money is spent while the curve does not move.
