EN Paying a friend back on the spot prices the meal and closes the account; saying "next one's on me" deliberately leaves it open, and the open account is the reason to meet again. Mauss's Essai sur le don (1925) assembled second-hand material from the Northwest Coast, Melanesia, Roman, Hindu and Germanic law to ask why a free gift must be returned. His answer is three linked obligations — to give, to receive, to reciprocate — with the middle one easily missed: refusing a gift in public is close to a declaration of war. The binding force rests on two constraints: the return must be delayed and preferably unequal, since an exact, immediate return is change, and a settled account is a closed relationship. Evidence: Mauss never did fieldwork. The most criticised passage is on the Maori hau, drawn from Best's transcription of Tamati Ranapiri. Firth (1929) held that Mauss overread a vaguer, more passive notion; Sahlins (1972) reread the text as a practical rule about passing on yield rather than a spirit. The three obligations survive; the animate gift does not.
EN Malinowski spent over two years in the Trobriand Islands between 1915 and 1918 and recorded the kula: red shell necklaces (soulava) circulating one way around a ring of islands, white shell armshells (mwali) the other, with a necklace answered by an armshell and the return always deferred by months or years. The valuables are largely unusable and cannot be held long. Crucially, the same voyages also carried ordinary haggled barter, gimwali, and conducting kula like gimwali was a serious insult — so gift and trade are not evolutionary stages but two tools in the same hands. Gimwali yields goods; kula yields a partner on a distant island who houses and speaks for you, which on a dangerous sea route is the point. Fifty years later Annette Weiner spent ten months on Kiriwina and found what Malinowski had barely recorded: a women's wealth system of banana-leaf bundles and skirts distributed in the thousands at mortuary ceremonies (Women of Value, Men of Renown, 1976) — a hard case of reflexivity. Her later argument on inalienable possessions holds that the capacity to give rests on the capacity to keep. Evidence: ethnographic cases.
EN Among the Kwakwaka'wakw and neighbouring peoples of the Northwest Coast, the potlatch distributed and sometimes destroyed great quantities of goods, obliging recipients to return more later or lose standing — the same mechanism as before, now as pressure: where owing defines position, giving can coerce. The colonial record must be stated plainly: Canada amended the Indian Act in 1884 to ban the potlatch, in force from 1885 until the provision was removed in 1951, justified as an aid to assimilation; enforcement was patchy and the ceremony largely went underground. Sahlins (1972) offers a useful axis — generalized, balanced and negative reciprocity — sliding with social distance; a framework, not a testable law. On whether payment crowds out goodwill, Titmuss (1970) argued it does. Mellström and Johannesson's 2008 Swedish randomised experiment with 262 never-donors found no significant difference among men, a near-halving of willingness among women when paid SEK 50, and full cancellation of that effect when the payment could be given to charity — so crowding out is conditional. Gneezy and Rustichini (2000) found a late-pickup fine in six of ten Haifa day-care centres increased lateness, which persisted after removal; a single small natural experiment, rarely directly replicated.
