EN Mary Douglas lived among the Lele of the Kasai from 1949 and published Purity and Danger in 1966. Her opening move: there is no such thing as absolute dirt. Shoes are not dirty; shoes on the dining table are. Dirt, in a phrase she borrowed rather than coined, is matter out of place — which means every judgement of dirtiness is a classification scheme speaking on your behalf, and no scheme covers everything. Her own field had a case: the pangolin fits none of the Lele categories — scaled like a fish yet climbing trees, four-legged yet bearing one young at a time like a human, toothless, and it does not flee. By the intuition that anomalies repel, it should have been shunned. Instead it sits at the centre of a cult. The durable point is that residue must be dealt with, while the direction is open: the same anomaly can be made filthy or made sacred. The strongest criticism is Douglas's insistence that pollution has nothing to do with hygiene. Curtis and colleagues in 2004 collected over 40,000 web ratings of matched image pairs; those carrying disease cues were rated more disgusting across every region. That is correlational survey data, not an experiment, but it shows disgust does track some real disease cues. Some pollution rules overlap with pathogen transmission and some do not, and the two have to be checked separately.

EN Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 list clean and unclean animals. The popular hygiene reading fails: many listed items pose no health problem, and the text's own reason is never sickness but uncleanness. Douglas read the list as a grid — land animals must both chew the cud and have a cloven hoof; the pig has the hoof without the cud, while camel, hyrax and hare are described as having the cud without the hoof. Water creatures need fins and scales. What is forbidden is not dangerous but ill-fitting: residue of a classification, handled as taboo. A detail supports her: hyrax and hare do not in fact ruminate, so the list runs on folk classification, not zoology. The strongest rival is Marvin Harris's materialist account — pigs were costly in an arid pastoral economy — which explains the pig beautifully and the shellfish not at all. The decisive fact is that Douglas later retracted this chapter: her universal claim that anomaly repels failed comparative testing, her own pangolin being the counterexample, and in Leviticus as Literature (1999) she argued the animals are protected rather than abhorred and the book's structure mirrors the tabernacle. A theory's most famous example can be wrong while the mechanism beneath it stands. Evidence strength: this is textual interpretation, with no available experiment.

EN Douglas's second and bolder move: the rules a society places on the body take their shape from that society's situation at its own boundaries. The body is a bounded system with openings — mouth, breaks in the skin, orifices — and things that cross them: saliva, blood, milk, excreta. Rules about these, she argued, should be read as social boundaries rather than as hygiene. That yields a checkable expectation: the harder a group has to work to maintain who counts as one of its own, the more elaborate its rules about bodily margins. Her example was Srinivas's 1952 ethnography of the Coorgs of South India. The weightiest and most contested case is caste. Dumont argued in Homo Hierarchicus (1966) that the pure/impure opposition is the encompassing principle of the whole hierarchy. The criticisms are strong and varied: Raheja's 1988 fieldwork in north India placed the land-controlling dominant caste and its gift relations at the centre rather than a Brahmanical purity scale; Dirks argued in 2001 that colonial censuses and administration substantially produced the rigid ordering; earlier critics noted that Dumont relied on elite self-representation while those at the bottom experience domination and material deprivation rather than consensual hierarchy. No side is taken here, but one thing must be said plainly: caste discrimination causes real harm, and untouchability is abolished by Article 17 of India's constitution. Analysing a mechanism is not the same as treating it as a spectacle. For the contemporary case: Zhong and Liljenquist reported in Science in 2006 that recalling one's own unethical act increased desire for cleaning products — the much-cited Macbeth effect. Direct replications failed: Earp and colleagues ran three higher-powered attempts with the original materials across countries in 2014 and detected nothing, and a 2018 meta-analysis of 15 studies found a small pooled effect (g ≈ 0.17) that was non-significant among independent laboratories. The honest status is: not established.
