"The salesperson's most valuable, least renewable resource is time. Time spent on a bad opportunity is time stolen from a good one.""
EN Your product copies infinitely; your time doesn't. Every hour on someone who'll never buy is an hour stolen from someone who will — that's opportunity cost. Worse is the sunk-cost trap: the longer you've chased, the harder you cling, pouring good time after bad. Qualifying step one is treating "should I chase this" as an investment call, not a faith that effort always pays off.
Why it works
"Budget, Authority, Need, Timeline — if you can't check these, you don't have a qualified opportunity, you have a conversation.""
EN Don't allocate effort on a hunch — turn "promising" into checkable signals. Classic BANT: Budget (is there money), Authority (can the person you're talking to decide), Need (is the pain real), Timing (is it now). Four greens = go all in; missing budget or timing = nurture, don't push hard; the person has no say (no authority) = climb the chain. Separate "likes it" from "will buy."
"The moment you're willing to walk away, you stop being a salesperson they need to defend against — and start being an advisor they can trust.""
EN The most counterintuitive move: when the signals genuinely don't fit, you say "I don't think this is right for you." It saves both sides' time and often raises trust — even makes them want it more. A seller willing to push you away clearly isn't just chasing the close, and people want what they might lose. Caveat: this only works when you truly mean it. Faked as a "hard-to-get" act, it's manipulation and eventually shows.
"Don't ask who could use your product. Ask who your best customers already are — then go find more of them.""
EN Don't qualify ad hoc — keep an Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) as a ruler. Counterintuitively, don't imagine "who might be interested"; pull up the customers you've already won who stayed and renewed, find what they share (industry, size, pain, trigger), and turn it into one checkable profile. Score two axes — fit × interest — and beware the "enthusiasm trap": high interest but low fit wastes the most time.
