EN "Don't take it personally" fails as an instruction because it aims at the one part of this you don't control. The sting lands before you've judged anything: in the classic Cyberball experiment, people excluded from a simple online ball-toss game report a real drop in belonging and self-esteem — and it still happens when they're told in advance that the other players are just a computer script, and even when the group excluding them is one they openly despise. The hit is reflexive, not reasoned. What you do control is the ninety seconds after. Two moves, both cheap. Name it: say or write the actual emotion ("that's the sting of being turned down, plus some embarrassment") rather than "I feel bad" — putting feelings into words measurably lowers amygdala response and recruits right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex. Then reappraise: change the subject of the sentence from "he doesn't want me" to "he doesn't want this thing right now", which isn't consolation, it's accuracy — he has no information about you as a person. Reappraisal lowers the emotional response itself; suppression, the thing most salespeople actually do, only lowers the visible expression while raising physiological arousal and degrading memory for what was said. Then extract one fact worth writing down ("budget frees up next quarter") so the call isn't a pure loss, and take sixty seconds on your feet before the next one — not as a ritual, but so the physiological tail of the last call doesn't leak into the tone of the next.
EN A losing streak hurts mostly because you read it as a signal about you. Run the arithmetic first. At a 5% close rate, a run of 20 straight no's happens by pure luck 36% of the time; 30 in a row, 21%; 40 in a row, 13%. Only around 60 consecutive no's does the probability drop under 5% — that's where a streak stops looking like noise. A usable rule of thumb: your alarm threshold is roughly 3 ÷ p. At p = 5% that's 60 calls; at 1% for cold email it's 300; at 20% for warm renewals it's 15. Write your number on the edge of your monitor, because the whole point is to convert "am I finished?" into a question with a checkable answer. There's a mechanism underneath, not just comfort. Dopamine neurons don't code reward, they code reward prediction error — the gap between what you expected and what you got. If you walk into each call expecting a yes, every no is a negative prediction error, and repeated negative prediction error is exactly the signal that extinguishes a behaviour. Set your expectation at the true base rate instead and the same no's stop registering as errors at all; nothing changed in the world, but the learning signal did. Below the threshold, score yourself only on inputs you control — dials made, real questions asked, follow-ups sent. Above it, don't work harder: check the list, the first thirty seconds, and whether these people have a budget. When a streak really is a signal, the answer is almost never "make a hundred more calls".
1. 我当时说给自己听的那句话是:______(照实写,别美化。)
EN Two people hear the same "we don't need this" and write down two different sentences. One writes "I'm not cut out for this" — permanent, pervasive, personal. The other writes "my opener ran too long with this type of company this month" — temporary, specific, about a behaviour. The difference isn't optimism versus pessimism as a personality trait; it's that only the second sentence has a verb you can act on. The first one leads nowhere, so what it actually produces is fewer dials tomorrow, which lowers your real close rate, which confirms the sentence. That's the loop that ends careers, and it's a self-fulfilling one. The best field evidence comes from insurance: Seligman and Schulman studied MetLife agents and found that explanatory style measured at hiring predicted both sales and, more importantly, survival — agents in the pessimistic half quit at roughly twice the rate of the optimistic half in year one. Treat the effect sizes as suggestive rather than settled; it's one industry, one company, and closely tied to the researchers' own programme. The exercise takes two minutes at the end of the day. Take the worst moment, write the sentence you actually told yourself, circle the three P's in it, and rewrite it in a fixed form: "this once, at [which step], I did [what]; next time I'll do [what] instead." One boundary that matters: the point isn't to take all the blame. Sometimes "nobody in this sector has budget this year" is simply true — that's temporary, specific and not about your character, so write it down as is. Accuracy beats positivity.
EN Closing is random, delayed, and gated by other people's budget cycles — and yet most people use it as their daily scoreboard, which means their daily motivation rests on a variable they don't control. The leak is structural, not a character flaw. Change the scoreboard: score the day on inputs you fully own (dials, diagnostic questions asked, follow-ups sent) and move closes and conversion rates to a weekly view. This isn't feel-good accounting. The revised account of learned helplessness is explicit about it: passivity under uncontrollable stress is the default response, mediated by the dorsal raphe nucleus, and what actually gets learned is control — detected by ventromedial prefrontal cortex, which then inhibits that default. So you don't need to remove the helplessness; you need one thing that is genuinely controllable and gets registered every single day. Three inputs, ticked on paper, is enough — you want the immediate certain receipt, which a CRM dashboard doesn't give you. Keep one weekly slot for "one thing I learned", because that converts uncontrollable outcomes into something that compounds: a better opener, a new objection pattern. Then actually detach after work. In the recovery literature the strongest predictor isn't how long you rest but whether you psychologically disengage — phone out of the bedroom, no pipeline-checking at weekends, one demanding thing in your life that has nothing to do with selling. Scrolling on the sofa isn't recovery; it's just not working. And don't let commission be your only source of meaning: it swings with the market, and anything that swings can't hold up long-term motivation.
